DETROIT, MI – Police in Detroit have taken individuals into custody in connection with the death of a missing teenager, Laurence Powell, whose body was found in a cemetery two days after he disappeared. Authorities are delving deeper into the case, suggesting that Powell may have been entangled with some questionable individuals.
The Detroit Police Department (DPD) is intensifying its efforts to combat violent crime, which has dominated headlines this summer. In a related move, federal authorities have opened eight firearm cases this month. The family of the deceased teenager, however, remains distraught and is seeking answers about what happened to Powell.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison confirmed that two persons of interest are in custody. One of them surrendered to a different police agency on an unrelated matter, while the other was apprehended over the weekend. Both individuals are adults, but Bettison refrained from commenting on whether they were with Powell on the night of his disappearance.
Powell’s sister recounted that he was last seen with a 22-year-old friend who had picked him up to go to a store, but Powell never returned. When officers discovered his body, he was wearing a ski mask and gloves. His sister speculated that he might have been coerced into doing something against his will.
Chief Bettison hinted that the mask and gloves could imply involvement in suspicious activities. Despite receiving numerous tips about Powell’s background, Bettison emphasized that Powell’s youth should not be overshadowed by these details.
The DPD’s crackdown on violence coincides with efforts by U.S. Attorney Jerome Gordon, who is allocating more resources to address gun crime and gang-related violence in Detroit. Authorities are urging parents to be more vigilant about their children’s whereabouts and associations.
The case continues to unfold as the DPD prepares to present their findings to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
