Texas authorities are asking for the public’s help in tracking down an inmate who was accidentally released from jail over the weekend.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, 36-year-old Troy Dugas was “mistakenly released” around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17. Dugas was supposed to begin serving a 5-year state prison sentence for assaulting a family member in Fort Bend County, along with a 2-year sentence for evading arrest in Brazoria County.
Standing 6’1” and weighing 215 pounds, Dugas had been in custody since Aug. 14 on unrelated charges that were later dropped. But jail staff reportedly failed to note his pending prison sentences and assumed he was eligible for release once the dismissed charges cleared.
“A thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances that led to Dugas’ erroneous release,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Officials are urging anyone who spots Dugas to call 911 immediately.
