An Arizona man who brutally killed his newlywed wife in a Home Depot parking lot has been sentenced to nearly two decades behind bars.
On Monday, Aug. 18, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced that 36-year-old Stephen Dennis received an 18-year prison sentence for the 2024 stabbing death of his wife, 37-year-old Aliccia Grant, a devoted mother of two. Earlier this year, Dennis pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
“This wasn’t just a violent crime — it was an act of betrayal carried out by someone who should have been a source of safety, not fear,” Mitchell said. “There is something especially cruel about a murder within a relationship built on trust. We will continue to aggressively pursue and hold violent domestic abusers accountable.”
The shocking killing happened in the early morning hours of Sept. 9, 2024, outside a Home Depot in north Phoenix. Witnesses reported hearing a woman screaming for help before finding Grant in the driver’s seat of a red Prius, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Dennis, who had been in the passenger seat, fled the scene on foot after grabbing a bag from the car, authorities said.
Despite the chaos, officers and bystanders rushed to help. As police applied pressure to her wounds, Grant used her dying breaths to identify Dennis as her attacker. She was rushed to the hospital but tragically died from her injuries.
Shortly afterward, Dennis called 911 and confessed to stabbing his wife. He also directed officers to the murder weapon, which was later recovered. Investigators revealed the couple had recently married but were discussing an annulment at the time of the attack.
Grant’s family has been left devastated. In a GoFundMe created to support her children, ages 10 and 16, relatives described her as “endlessly hopeful” and said her “loving energy left a permanent mark of inspiration on everyone who knew her.”
“She will be remembered as a loving daughter, sister, cousin, and friend,” the family wrote. “But most of all, as a wonderful mom to her two beloved kids.”
Dennis is now serving his sentence at the Arizona Department of Corrections.
