According to a government resolution published in the Hungarian Gazette, Kőszeg has been selected as the site of a new United Nations University institute. The Prime Minister has tasked the Minister for Culture and Innovation and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade with preparing the project.
The institute will operate within the Institute of Advanced Studies in Kőszeg and will serve as a Central and Eastern European research hub. Its mission will be to advance international studies in the fields of peace and security, transformative technologies, and societal and economic developments shaping the future.
The Ministry of Culture and Innovation emphasized that the new centre will collaborate with Hungarian and international universities and research institutions, further strengthening the global recognition of Hungarian science.
Minister for Culture and Innovation Balázs Hankó underlined that the establishment of the Kőszeg UN University Institute enhances Hungary’s scientific standing and contributes to regional development. He added that it will provide Hungarian researchers and students with new opportunities to connect with global academic excellence, while also benefiting the local community and economy.
The minister also recalled that, thanks to recent higher education reforms, 12 Hungarian universities now rank among the top 5 per cent of institutions worldwide.
As part of the global United Nations University network, which currently consists of 13 institutes, the new Kőszeg centre is expected to significantly increase the international embeddedness of Hungarian research.
