In this Media Miss minute, the head of Israel’s military has approved plans for the “next phase” of the war in Gaza, including a takeover of Gaza City. And comedy legend Conan O’Brien says late-night TV as we know it is on its deathbed.
Media Miss on the left: IDF chief approves ‘next phase’ of Gaza war
Israeli Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has announced Israel will officially expand its offensive against Hamas in Gaza — again.
Zamir said on Sunday, Aug. 17, Israeli forces plan to occupy Gaza City despite international condemnation and humanitarian concerns.
Hamas called the plans a “new wave of genocide and displacement” against the Palestinian people.
The move comes as civilian casualties in Gaza continue to mount, with more than 62,000 Palestinians killed in the past 22 months of war, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. It also comes as the United Nations says Gaza now faces the risk of mass starvation.
Media Miss on the right: Conan O’Brien warns late-night television nearing end
Former late-night TV host Conan O’Brien is sounding the alarm on the future of the format as we know it.
While being honored at the Television Academy Hall of Fame ceremony Saturday, Aug. 16, O’Brien said he expects late-night TV to see its end in the coming years, but that doesn’t spell the end for your favorite hosts.
“Late-night television as we’ve known it since around 1950 is going to disappear, but those voices are not going anywhere,” O’Brien said. “People like Stephen Colbert are too talented and too essential to go away. It’s not gonna happen.”
O’Brien was referring to last month’s announcement that “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will end in 2026.
