From today, visitors to Budapest can sample the Cake of Hungary and the nation’s best sugar-free cake at the Street of Hungarian Flavours, one of the highlights of the Saint Stephen’s Day celebrations.
The ‘Cake of Hungary’ is a long-standing tradition launched in 2007 by the Hungarian Confectioners’ Guild, where each year the country’s best pastry chefs compete to create a dessert that showcases Hungarian flavours, ingredients, and creativity. The winning cakes debut during the national holiday of Saint Stephen, Hungary’s founding king, and quickly become sought-after treats across the country.
The winning creation of this year’s national competition is the DCJ Stílusgyakorlat, a rich chocolate, caramel, and sour cherry cake, while the sugar-free category was won by the chocolate and cherry dessert named Álmodozó.
The festivities offer a wide range of family-friendly programmes, culinary delights, concerts, and performances throughout the capital. At the Várkert Bazár, the Alma Band entertains families in the morning, followed by evening concerts from artists such as Marót Viki and the Nova Kultúr Band, DJ Izil, and Mystery Gang.

This year, two new venues join the celebrations. On Margaret Island’s Great Meadow, the Family Adventure Island presents a mix of sports, music, and playful activities, capped with evening shows by Kefir and Tamás Horváth. Meanwhile, Liberty Square transforms into a Cultural Kaleidoscope featuring jazz and film music, children’s performances, and concerts from groups including the Hot Jazz Band, the Kerekes Band, and the Itt és Most Társulat.
The Magic Grove is designed especially for young children, offering a fairy-tale atmosphere with attractions such as Pom-Pom’s Tales, the adventures of Mirr-Murr the cat, and a circus-themed playhouse. Along the Műegyetem embankment, Road Movie Live will host performances by Hooligans and Irie Maffia, while Retro Tabán features Deák Bill Gyula and Bikini.
At the Millenáris Art Garden, the Rejtő Jenő time capsule welcomes visitors from morning until late evening, alongside a screening of the musical comedy How Could I Live Without You. Full programme details are available at szentistvannap.hu and through the official mobile application.
