Former President Joe Biden recently issued one of his strongest critiques of President Donald Trump since leaving office, saying that the United States is entering “dark days” for democracy, civil rights and the rule of law. Speaking to roughly 1,100 members of the National Bar Association in Chicago, Biden avoided naming Trump directly but left no doubt about his target, Knewz.com has learned.
‘Dark times in America’

Biden told the gathering of judges, lawyers and legal scholars that the current moment is unlike any political crisis he has witnessed. “I’ve seen dark times in America, but what we’re living through now is different. It’s an assault from within,” he said.
Biden criticized Congress

The former president also criticized what he described as a “complicit” Republican Congress that has enabled attacks on judicial independence and civil rights protections. He also faulted some in the legal profession for failing to defend constitutional principles, as he said that too many law firms “bend to bullies” instead of standing up for the rule of law.
An urgent warning to America

While Biden has spoken occasionally since leaving the White House, this address marked one of his most urgent appeals. In his farewell speech, he warned against oligarchic influence, disinformation and weakening democratic institutions. At his most recent address, he emphasized that lawyers have a unique responsibility to uphold democracy. He closed by telling his audience that the legal community must act as “the last line of defense” against an erosion of rights. “If the law doesn’t hold,” Biden said, “the rest will fall.”
Trump’s judicial and political moves

Former President Biden’s remarks come as Trump accelerates efforts to reshape the federal judiciary and direct the Justice Department to pursue political adversaries. He has also endorsed state-level laws that restrict voting access and dismantle diversity programs. For Biden, these moves reflect a broader effort to roll back hard-won civil rights gains and normalize political retaliation. He framed the moment as the most consequential test for American democracy since the civil rights era, warning that institutional checks and balances are at risk.
