Biden told the gathering of judges, lawyers and legal scholars that the current moment is unlike any political crisis he has witnessed. “I’ve seen dark times in America, but what we’re living through now is different. It’s an assault from within,” he said.
Biden criticized Congress
The former president also criticized what he described as a “complicit” Republican Congress that has enabled attacks on judicial independence and civil rights protections. He also faulted some in the legal profession for failing to defend constitutional principles, as he said that too many law firms “bend to bullies” instead of standing up for the rule of law.

While Biden has spoken occasionally since leaving the White House, this address marked one of his most urgent appeals. In his farewell speech, he warned against oligarchic influence, disinformation and weakening democratic institutions. At his most recent address, he emphasized that lawyers have a unique responsibility to uphold democracy. He closed by telling his audience that the legal community must act as “the last line of defense” against an erosion of rights. “If the law doesn’t hold,” Biden said, “the rest will fall.”

Former President Biden’s remarks come as Trump accelerates efforts to reshape the federal judiciary and direct the Justice Department to pursue political adversaries.
