Former Attorney General William “Bill” Barr testified that he never saw any evidence President Donald Trump intervened in Jeffrey Epstein’s case or committed any crime related to the disgraced financier.
Barr appeared Monday for a closed-door deposition before the House Oversight Committee.
He told lawmakers during the session that Trump never gave input, advice or direction regarding Epstein’s criminal proceedings or his death.
A source stated to the Daily Caller that Barr fully cooperated with the deposition, answering questions posed by both Republican and Democratic committee members and staff.
His testimony comes as part of a larger investigation into Epstein, launched under Chairman James Comer.
Barr told committee members that if there were incriminating evidence against Trump, the Department of Justice (DOJ) under President Joe Biden would have already made it public.
The former attorney general also repeated his position that Epstein died by suicide, according to the source.
Barr is the first of six former attorneys general subpoenaed by Comer to testify in the House Oversight Committee’s probe.
He is also the first of 10 total individuals Comer has called to appear before the committee.
Former Attorneys General Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder, Merrick Garland, Jeff Sessions and Alberto Gonzales have each received letters detailing the focus of the investigation.
Those letters also outlined how their roles may connect to what they knew about Epstein’s prosecution, imprisonment or death.
In addition to the former attorneys general, subpoenas were sent to former FBI directors James Comey and Robert Mueller, as well as former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
A spokesperson for the Oversight Committee confirmed to the Daily Caller that the panel will withdraw its subpoena for Mueller.
The committee cited health issues that prevent the former FBI director from testifying.
Mueller previously served as FBI director from 2001 to 2013 and later worked as special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Comer told reporters Monday, before Barr’s deposition, that the Department of Justice is cooperating with the Oversight Committee’s subpoena for Epstein-related files.
The chairman said he expects the documents to be released to the panel soon.
On Sunday, Comer announced that DOJ officials informed the committee they would begin releasing Epstein-related records to the Oversight Committee on Friday, Aug. 22.
Comer confirmed this development publicly in a statement shared through the Oversight Committee’s official account on X.
“Officials with the Department of Justice have informed us that the Department will begin to provide Epstein-related records to the Oversight Committee this week,” Comer said in the committee’s statement.
The Oversight Committee has not yet set public hearing dates for other subpoenaed witnesses.
Additional depositions are expected in the coming weeks as the panel reviews documents provided by the Department of Justice.
With the DOJ beginning to release Epstein-related records to the committee, lawmakers are preparing for further witness testimony and potential public hearings later this year.
