The State Department has revoked more than 6,000 student visas so far in 2025, citing overstays, law violations, and even support for terrorism, according to Fox News Digital.
The Trump administration has rolled out a series of initiatives targeting visa abuse, with a special focus on foreign students attending U.S. colleges and universities. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced in May that the government was reviewing the visa status of those involved in pro-Palestine protests.
Officials say the majority of the revoked visas stemmed from overstays or criminal activity, including assault, DUIs, and burglary. But hundreds were also linked to terrorism-related behavior, the State Department confirmed.
“Every single student visa revoked under the Trump Administration has happened because the individual has either broken the law or expressed support for terrorism while in the United States,” a senior State Department official said. “About 4,000 visas alone have been revoked because these visitors broke the law while visiting our country, including records of assault and DUIs.”
Roughly 800 students lost their visas due to assault-related arrests or charges. Another 200 to 300 visas were yanked for supporting terrorism, including fundraising for Hamas, which the U.S. classifies as a terrorist group, officials added.
In total, about 40,000 visas of all types have been revoked in 2025. That figure dwarfs the 16,000 visas revoked during the same period under the Biden administration. “Even if the previous administration was doing less, they were still revoking visas,” the official said. “It’s not something that just started on January 20 … So this has happened for years.”
Rubio told lawmakers in May that “thousands” of student visas had been rescinded since January, and warned more were coming. “I don’t know the latest count, but we probably have more to do,” he said during a Senate appropriations hearing. “We’re going to continue to revoke the visas of people who are here as guests and are disrupting our higher education facilities.”
Democrats have pushed back, accusing the administration of trampling due process. “I do think it’s a fundamental attack on freedom, because due process is the guardian of the gate to keep a government from taking away people’s life or liberty, and liberty is what happens when you take away a visa without due process,” Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., said.
The crackdown comes as Trump signed multiple executive orders in January aimed at tightening vetting procedures and combating terrorism and antisemitism. One order directs federal agencies to “vet and screen to the maximum degree possible” any foreign nationals entering the U.S. Another requires the government to use “all available and appropriate legal tools” to prosecute or remove those engaged in unlawful antisemitic harassment or violence.
