JOHNSONVILLE, SC – The quiet of a rural road near Johnsonville was shattered late on June 24 when Florence County deputies responded to a distressing call. Upon arrival, officers discovered 16-year-old Trey Wright, a promising athlete and sophomore at Johnsonville High School, lying in the road, critically injured from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Trey succumbed to his injuries.
The tragedy, initially seen as an unsolved mystery, took a dark turn when video evidence emerged. Authorities now believe Trey was the victim of a premeditated scheme orchestrated by someone he trusted—his own girlfriend. Investigators allege she arranged for another boy, reportedly a romantic rival, to confront Trey on the isolated road.
The alleged shooter, 19-year-old Devin Raper, is said to have brandished a weapon and engaged in a heated argument with Trey before the fatal shots were fired. Raper was apprehended the following day, facing charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Five days later, Trey’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kingston, was arrested as an accessory before the fact. Authorities claim she knowingly drove Raper to the scene, aware that he was armed and anticipating a deadly confrontation.
During his initial court appearance, Raper attempted to defend himself before the judge, a move that deviated from standard courtroom protocol. His plea, however, fell on deaf ears, as the judge remained unswayed.
The investigation soon widened, leading to the arrests of several others allegedly involved in the plot. Among them, 18-year-old Karin Bovey, 17-year-old Sydney Kerns, and 16-year-old Hunter Kendall, all charged as adults under South Carolina law. Additionally, two minors, whose identities remain protected, face charges related to the incident.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office indicated that a tenth suspect is anticipated to surrender. This series of arrests highlights the devastating impact of the crime, leaving multiple young lives in turmoil.
