SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CA – The bodies of a Sacramento mother and her infant daughter, missing for over a month, have been discovered in a canal in San Joaquin County. Whisper Owen and her eight-month-old daughter, Sandra McCarty, were last seen on July 15. Dive teams located their vehicle near Escalon, marking a tragic conclusion to an ongoing investigation.
Authorities are still piecing together the events that led to the discovery. A member of the recovery dive team suggested that Owen might have taken a wrong turn, which resulted in the vehicle backing into the canal. Within ten minutes of searching, the team found a car matching the description of Owen’s silver 2006 Chevy Trailblazer.
Surveillance footage had previously shown Owen and her daughter traveling from Fresno in the vehicle. Family members, desperate for answers, enlisted volunteer dive teams to search the area after authorities pinged her last known cell phone location near the San Joaquin County border.
Family members expressed relief at the closure but also voiced frustration at the perceived lack of effort from local authorities in the search. They had pleaded for continued searches in the area, which eventually led to the discovery by volunteer teams.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, examining tire marks leading into the canal. It remains unclear if alcohol or drugs were involved. The medical examiner’s office is set to confirm the identities and determine the cause of death.
Family members shared their grief, describing Owen as the glue that held their family together. They are now faced with the challenge of moving forward without her and Sandra.
As the investigation continues, authorities aim to piece together the timeline of Owen’s journey from Fresno to Sacramento. They have not ruled out any possibilities, including suspicious activity.
The family, while heartbroken, is now able to bring Whisper and Sandra home, seeking solace in their memories and the support of their community.
