SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CA – The bodies of a Sacramento mother and her infant daughter, missing for over a month, have been discovered in a canal in San Joaquin County. Whisper Owen and her eight-month-old daughter, Sandra McCarty, were last seen on July 15. Dive teams located their vehicle near Escalon, marking a tragic conclusion to an ongoing investigation.
Authorities are still piecing together the events that led to the discovery. A member of the recovery dive team suggested that Owen might have taken a wrong turn, which resulted in the vehicle backing into the canal. Within ten minutes of searching, the team found a car matching the description of Owen’s silver 2006 Chevy Trailblazer.
Surveillance footage had previously shown Owen and her daughter traveling from Fresno in the vehicle. Family members, desperate for answers, enlisted volunteer dive teams to search the area after authorities pinged her last known cell phone location near the San Joaquin County border.
