(NewsNation) — Hurricane Erin again strengthened to a Category 4 storm overnight, prompting evacuations Monday as the National Hurricane Center warns of expected “life-threatening surf and rip currents” along parts of the East Coast.
Mandatory evacuations were issued for North Carolina’s Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands, which had been under a State of Emergency since Sunday evening.
The Bahamas government issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the central Bahamas, while a Tropical Storm Warning remained in effect for the Turks and Caicos Islands and southeast Bahamas, the hurricane center reported.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will provide an update on the storm at 11 a.m. EDT. NewsNation will stream it from this story when it begins.
The eye of the hurricane is expected to remain hundreds of miles from the coast, but its 130 mph maximum sustained winds and recent growth spurt is expected to generate dangerous conditions for parts of the United States — including rip currents and high surf.
Around 16% of hurricane-related fatalities come from rip currents and rough seas, according to The Weather Channel.
