I’ll be honest, I don’t understand where this question even comes from. Other than that, it’s 2025, and every interview with a famous person is an excuse to get them to attack Donald Trump and/or the Americans who voted for them. It’s not the first time someone has tried to get Denzel Washington to sound off on our culture wars or current events, and he rarely takes the bait if ever.
So, where a question about “cancel culture” comes from, who knows. He’s there to promote Highest 2 Lowest, which is a remake of a Kurosawa film that has nothing to do with the topic. Maybe Spike Lee was supposed to jump in with an anti-Trump rant. Whatever the reason for the question is, Denzel gave a valuable lesson in dealing with all of social media, let alone cancel culture.
When he starts by asking what cancel culture was and why it was important, you know the rest is going to be gold.
“Who cares? What made public support so important to begin with?”
“I don’t care who’s following who. You can’t lead and follow at the same time, and you can’t follow and lead at the same time.”
“You can’t be canceled if you haven’t signed up. Don’t sign up.”
“I don’t follow anybody. I follow the heavenly spirit. I follow God, I don’t follow man. I have faith in God. I have hope in man, but look around, it ain’t working out so well.”
In summary, go touch grass and put your faith in God while you’re doing so.
If we were grading Denzel viral moments, I would rank this in the top five, if not the top three. This is #1:
It’s like when someone wants you to comment on a topic and starts with “People say…” What people? Who are these people? There’s rarely ever a good answer that follows other than “people on the internet.”
As Denzel says, it only affects you if you let yourself care about it. Don’t.
