Ford Motor Company has announced a recall affecting more than 100,000 of its popular F-150 pickup trucks, citing a defect that could increase the risk of crashes.
The recall adds to a growing list of safety concerns flagged in Ford’s vehicles over the past two years.
The recall applies to 103,000 trucks equipped with axle hub bolts that could break, according to official documents.
If this occurs, the vehicle may roll away as though the parking brake had not been engaged, creating a potential hazard for drivers and pedestrians.
Reuters reported that the defect could also damage axle hub splines, which are responsible for transferring power to the wheels.
Damage to these components can result in a sudden loss of power while the vehicle is in operation.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated in its recall notice that “both of these conditions can increase the risk of a crash.”
CBS News noted that the federal agency explained that the issue involves the rear axle hub bolt, which may “fatigue and break” over time.
The NHTSA added that some drivers could notice signs of the problem before a failure occurs.
“If the bolt breaks, customers may report a rattle noise,” the notice explained.
Such early warnings could allow drivers to take action before the issue worsens.
Ford identified the affected models as F-150 trucks manufactured between January 2, 2023, and May 21, 2025.
These vehicles are among the most widely sold pickups in the United States, making the scope of the recall significant.
Notices to vehicle owners are scheduled to be mailed beginning Monday and will continue through May 22, 2026.
Ford has instructed its dealers to replace the rear axle shaft assemblies in affected vehicles to correct the defect.
A Ford spokesperson confirmed that the company has not received any reports of accidents or injuries tied to the defect at this time.
The NHTSA has estimated that about 1 percent of the recalled F-150 trucks are expected to actually contain the defect, according to Fast Company.
The latest recall follows a series of similar actions taken by Ford in recent years.
In early 2024, the automaker recalled 113,000 F-150 pickup trucks with a special tow package after identifying another axle-related problem.
CBS further highlighted at the time that later in May 2024, Ford issued another recall for nearly 274,000 vehicles, specifically targeting its Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs.
The problem in those cases was linked to a brake system malfunction that regulators said could pose a deadly risk.
The recall involving the Expedition and Navigator was triggered by concerns that the front brake lines could come into contact with the engine air cleaner outlet pipe, according to the NHTSA.
That contact, resulting from a possible installation defect, could lead to a brake fluid leak.
A leak of that type could compromise the braking system and cause a complete loss of brake function.
The NHTSA noted that such a malfunction “may cause a loss of brake function while driving, increasing crash risks.”
The recalls underscore the challenges Ford has faced in ensuring safety across its fleet of vehicles.
The F-150, in particular, is Ford’s flagship model and has been America’s best-selling vehicle for decades.
Any safety-related issue with the F-150 is likely to have a wide impact due to the model’s popularity.
