In an effort to combat crime in Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump moved last week to take control of the Metropolitan Police Department and deploy National Guard troops.
To highlight that effort, the White House released a video this past Thursday of law enforcement at work in the nation’s capital.Â

As Breitbart noted, the video was posted to social media along with a caption that read, “Nighttime Routine: Operation Make D.C. Safe Again Edition.”

The footage shows a group of FBI agents and U.S. Marshals converging on an apartment complex and taking a suspect into custody.
Breitbart recalled how Trump announced his plan during a Monday press conference in which he stressed that Washington, D.C. has a higher homicide rate than the capital cities of many other nations.
Trump vows to cut crime: “We’re not going to let it happen anymore”
The president referenced his authority under section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, a piece of legislation which was passed in 1973.
“I understand a lot of you tend to be on the liberal side, but … you don’t want to get mugged and raped and shot and killed,” Trump told reporters who were in attendance.
“You want to be able to leave your apartment or your house where you live and feel safe and go into a store to buy a newspaper or buy something, and you don’t have that now,” he stressed.
“The number of car thefts has doubled over the past five years, and the number of carjackings has more than tripled,” Trump lamented.
“Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs and homeless people, and we’re not going to let it happen anymore,” he insisted.
Former head of Capitol Police optimistic about Trump’s plan
Steven Sund previously served as chief of the U.S. Capitol Police Chief, and he voiced agreement with Trump’s decision during an interview with Breitbart.
Sund expressed optimism, saying, “We did this in the early ’90s, when I was with D.C. police, we were able to drive down homicide rates.”
“When Chief Lanier was chief, think about 2010 to 2014, we had a homicide rate that was maybe right around 100, 170 a year ,” he recalled before adding, “Now 2023, you got 274 homicides.”
