BOSTON, MA – Ty’Ran Dixon, a professional football player and coach from Colombia, found himself entangled in a harrowing ordeal rather than pursuing his NFL dreams. Dixon, who was playing overseas in Finland, was unexpectedly arrested at Logan Airport in Boston due to a case of mistaken identity that led to months of wrongful imprisonment.
The nightmare began in September 2024, when Dixon was handcuffed and informed of an outstanding warrant from South Carolina, a state he had never visited. The warrant was linked to the tragic 2023 shooting of Jasmine Roach, a young woman who was four months pregnant at the time of her death in Barnwell County.
According to a lawsuit, Barnwell County investigators had access to critical information within 12 hours of the shooting. Text messages from a credible source identified the actual suspect as Tyren Dickinson, complete with photos and links to his Facebook profile. Despite the different spelling and a significant weight difference, law enforcement mistakenly pursued Dixon.
Internal emails reveal that detectives and investigators were aware they might have apprehended the wrong individual. An email from an Aiken public safety officer correctly spelled the suspect’s name, yet investigators failed to act on this crucial detail or the photo evidence provided.
Dixon’s attorneys argue that systemic failures within law enforcement led to his wrongful arrest. They cite multiple fundamental errors, including the delayed arrest of the actual suspect, who remained free for 15 months following the murder.
After 67 days of detention, Dixon was finally moved to Barnwell County, where it took investigators mere minutes to realize their mistake. Within half an hour, authorities acknowledged they had the wrong man.
The ordeal has left Dixon and his legal team questioning the procedures and accountability of law enforcement. They emphasize the devastating impact false arrests can have on innocent lives, urging for more rigorous checks before pursuing suspects.
Dixon’s story highlights the critical need for accuracy and diligence in law enforcement practices to prevent such life-altering errors from occurring in the future.
