Quite frankly it was an artful piece of diplomacy and PR. First Lady Melania Trump wrote a personal letter to Vladimir Putin. “It is time” to put the children first.
As we watched the events on Friday unfold, knowing full well that this meeting between Trump and Putin was an important step in mediation and getting Putin and Zelensky to the peace table, a small quiet bit of diplomacy took place off-camera.
The First Lady sent a letter to Putin, which President Trump delivered.
Since the start of the war in late February 2022, Russia has abducted thousands of Ukrainian children, forcibly transferring them to Russia, attempting to assign them Russian citizenship and have them attend schools in Russia.
The United Nations hammered Russia in March for the suffering the children in Ukraine have endured because of the war, which has been ongoing for about three-and-a-half years. Russia has previously argued that it has been shielding kids from the conflict areas.
Her letter is simple, understated, yet packs quite a punch.
“Dear President Putin,” the first lady’s letter begins. “Every child shares the same quiet dreams in their heart, whether born randomly into a nation’s rustic countryside or a magnificent city-center. They dream of love, possibility, and safety from danger.”
“As parents, it is our duty to nurture the next generation’s hope,” the letter continued. “As leaders, the responsibility to sustain our children extends beyond the comfort of a few.”
“Undeniably, we must strive to paint a dignity-filled world for all—so that every soul may wake to peace, and so that the future itself is perfectly guarded,” read the letter. “A simple yet profound concept, Mr. Putin, as I am sure you agree, is that each generation’s descendants begin their lives with a purity—an innocence which stands above geography, government, and ideology.”
The first lady continued that “in today’s world, some children are forced to carry a quiet laughter, untouched by the darkness around them—a silent defiance against the forces that can potentially claim their future.”
“Mr. Putin, you can singlehandedly restore their melodic laughter,” the first lady wrote. “In protecting the innocence of these children, you will do more than serve Russia alone—you serve humanity itself.”
Does Putin, who is a sociopathic dictator, truly understand the ramifications of such a letter? Melania Trump since the beginning of her husband’s first term in office, has always been looking out for children, especially those who are underserved. Such as the children in foster care, or the children targeted online by malicious actors. Her concern for the children whom Putin has kidnapped is genuine.
The same letter could be written to Zelensky as well. Especially given, at the time of this writing, he just signaled he’s going to throw roadblocks into the peace deal.
There is no peace deal on the table yet.
Russia hasn’t even offered anything, much less have the conditions of the enforcement of a deal been negotiated. https://t.co/PVTcLJpmqq

Granted, we don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, but such a statement as this prior to Zelensky’s meeting in Brussels and the meetings in DC tomorrow is ill-advised. No, it’s asinine.
Is he putting Ukrainian citizens and children first? Sure doesn’t look like it.
Melania’s plea to Putin to put the children first and bring back genuine laughter and play into their lives is profound.
And it’s an additional strategic move in the mediation/negotiations by President Trump. She’s been a quiet presence behind the scenes on all of this for months now.
Furthermore, it’s obvious that this letter was written to help move Putin to agree to release the children back to their families.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters on Tuesday, ahead of the Trump-Putin summit, that Moscow has been stonewalling talks on the return of Ukrainian children.
Ukraine’s leader said that while occasional transfers have taken place, with the assistance of other nations, Kyiv has not been able to strike a wide-ranging agreement with Russia on the matter.
“That is why we wanted to get certain matters settled in this trilateral track: ceasefire, an all-for-all exchange, and the return of children,” Zelensky said. “This is something everyone benefits from: President Trump benefits, the Russians lose nothing, the Ukrainians lose nothing. It’s a fair compromise.”
My advice to Zelensky is that he listen first to what is offered, and think it through before arbitrarily saying no – like he just did this morning on his way to Brussels.
Melania’s letter on behalf of the children has resonated with many. Will it resonate with Putin and help further the negotiations? Or will he ignore it and thus create a strategic PR disaster of his own making? The ball is in his court.
As Melania said, “It is time.”
