BARTOW, FL – A routine home improvement project turned into a disaster for Scott Fitzwater when an 80-ton crane, hired to remove a potentially dangerous water oak tree, toppled and crashed into his home. The incident nearly turned tragic as Fitzwater and his two young daughters were inside at the time.
Three months prior, a large branch from the same tree had fallen on the ceiling above Fitzwater’s bedroom, prompting him to take action. On the day of the removal, the family was assured it was safe to stay indoors. However, the crane’s boom, along with parts of the tree, suddenly snapped and plummeted onto the house, causing significant damage.
“I just grabbed my girls and hunkered down,” Fitzwater recounted, describing how he shielded his daughters as debris rained down. Though he sustained minor injuries, the family was otherwise unharmed.
The aftermath has been challenging. Most of the family’s farm animals have been relocated or sold, and their belongings are in storage as they seek temporary housing. The repairs are estimated to take at least six months, during which they will face financial strain, continuing to pay their mortgage alongside rental costs.
Compounding the crisis, it was discovered that the crane company’s insurance had lapsed, leaving questions about who will cover the expenses. Investigations by local authorities and insurance adjusters are underway to determine what went wrong.
Fitzwater expressed frustration with the situation, acknowledging that while it could have been worse, it should have gone much smoother. The crane company has yet to comment on the incident.
For now, the Fitzwater family is staying with relatives, trying to navigate the financial and emotional toll of the accident. Despite the setbacks, Fitzwater remains hopeful for a resolution that will allow them to rebuild and return home.
