Cheryl Hines, longtime co-star of Larry David on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, may be sitting out his newest comedy project—not because of talent, but politics.
The Daily Mail reported that the upcoming HBO series, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, is being co-produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, and insiders say Hines has been effectively iced out due to her marriage to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
David’s six-episode satire is being built with familiar Curb collaborators, including showrunner Jeff Schaffer, and plans to mix returning faces with new guest stars—though Hines, who played his on-screen wife across all 12 seasons, has conspicuously not been confirmed.
Obamas Said To Oppose Hines’s Involvement
According to those close to the production, the Obamas are drawing a hard line: no one with Trump affiliations should have a place in their projects.
That reportedly includes Hines, whose husband, RFK Jr., served as Health and Human Services secretary under Trump and leads a wellness platform with a name noticeably echoing MAGA’s cadence—MAHA.
One source close to the show explained that Hines’s political shift made her persona non grata: “She dropped her affiliation with the Democratic Party and calls herself an Independent with a friendly rapport with Donald Trump.” That’s more than enough to keep her off the new series roster, despite her history with David and her integral role in his previous show.
Even Larry David himself doesn’t seem likely to override that position. Though he’s the executive producer, sources describe his relations with Hines as cool since RFK Jr.’s ascendance and his alignment with Trump-aligned causes.
For a town that insists it values diversity of opinions, the message here is clear: wrong politics, wrong gig. Hines seems to be facing exclusion over association, even while producing her projects, like a horror short in Italy with her daughter, Catherine, and drafting a memoir due later this year.
The Obamas’ influence isn’t subtle. Statements from the production suggest the former first couple “despise” Trump and are unwilling to have anyone remotely affiliated with his orbit join the creative team—it’s political filtering with a Hollywood filter.
It almost reads like satire itself: a comedy show about America’s milestone year, cutting out one of its stars less for what she said and more for who she married. Whatever happened to judging artists by their craft?
Hines’s fall from favor isn’t just professional. Her public appearance at RFK Jr.’s Senate confirmation hearing drew harsh criticism from David’s ex-wife, Laurie, who posted that Hines’s role as a “dutiful, adoring wife” was a performance “setting women back decades.”
Hines brushed off the comment in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, describing it as “odd” and clarifying that she has no real relationship with Laurie. Still, the jab highlighted lingering bitterness from years-old wounds surrounding how Hines and RFK Jr. became involved.
According to Mary Richardson Kennedy—RFK Jr.’s late wife—she introduced the couple at a charity event hosted by the Davids, and later felt betrayed.
RFK Jr. filed for divorce in 2010. Mary tragically died two years later, and Hines married the Kennedy scion in 2014, with David himself attending the ceremony in Hyannis Port.
Wellness Politics And the Cost of Independence
RFK Jr., now a MAGA-aligned public health figure, helms the Make America Healthy Again effort and has carved out a distinctive—if controversial—niche. Hines, by extension, appears guilty by association, at least in Hollywood’s eyes.
David, once fond of Hines both on and off screen, has reportedly cooled toward her since these political realignments. According to sources, his disdain for Trump is so intense that it’s influencing casting decisions alongside Higher Ground’s direction.
And although Hines claims she and David “remain friends,” her publicist offered no confirmation of her involvement in the upcoming series—a silence that echoes loud in industry circles used to leaks and announcements galore.
Curb Your Enthusiasm wrapped up its 12-season run in spring 2024, giving HBO ample time to prepare for David’s newest offering. But this new series is no ordinary follow-up—it’s creatively ambitious and emotionally charged, thanks in part to its politically conscious production team.
The show doesn’t yet have a confirmed title, but promotional material teases its tone: “President and Mrs. Obama wanted to honor America’s 250th anniversary… But then Larry David called.” The humor is intact—just not, apparently, for everyone.
Schaffer, the show’s co-writer and director, added that the series spotlights figures who were “largely ignored by history.” That might just be an unwitting metaphor for Hines’s current position—present at the creation, edited from the retelling.
