The first day of school at a Miami elementary turned chaotic when a mother was arrested for allegedly threatening to shoot another parent in front of children.
Police say 39-year-old Erika Letisha Cruz was taken into custody Thursday morning at Arcola Lake Elementary after an altercation in the school’s drop-off line spiraled out of control. According to court documents, Cruz allegedly told another mother she would “shoot [her] in the face” while the woman was walking her disabled son into the building.
The victim also claimed Cruz’s vehicle bumped her as Cruz yelled at her to “hurry the f— up.” Moments later, Cruz allegedly got out of her car and confronted her directly with the disturbing threat.
Cruz appeared in court Friday before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer. While a police officer involved in the arrest told the judge he didn’t believe the car bump was intentional, officers did recover a loaded Sig Sauer P238 handgun inside Cruz’s purse.
Cruz is now facing three felony charges: possession of a firearm on school property, aggravated assault with a firearm, and aggravated battery. Bond was set for two of the charges, but she remains in custody at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center until an amount is set for the third. She has been approved for pretrial release once bond is posted.
Judge Glazer scolded Cruz during the hearing, saying, “What a terrible way for your child to begin the first day of school with Mom getting hauled off to jail. You have to be an adult and set a good example.”
The court also issued a stay-away order, barring Cruz from any contact with the other mother.
What should have been a fresh start to the school year has now become a frightening memory for parents and kids who witnessed the heated confrontation.
