US First Lady Melania Trump personally appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging action on the illegal abduction of Ukrainian children amid the ongoing war.
Reuters reports this, citing sources from the White House.
According to journalists, the letter from Melania Trump was personally delivered to Russian President Vladimir Putin by President Donald Trump during the negotiations in Alaska. Officials have not disclosed the full contents of the document but confirmed that it specifically addressed the issue of child abductions.
As of June 2025, Ukraine has officially confirmed the deportation of over 19,000 children. Efforts to secure their return are not limited to Kyiv alone: in 2023, the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children was established, comprising 41 countries and the Council of Europe. In 2024 alone, the coalition’s efforts enabled the return of approximately 600 children.
