COOPER CITY, FL – Authorities are investigating a deputy-involved shooting that left a man dead in Cooper City on Saturday. The incident unfolded around noon along Griffin Road, following reports that a man had shot himself.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene to assist the injured man. However, as they attempted to render aid, the situation escalated when the man attacked a deputy, prompting the officer to discharge his weapon, resulting in the man’s death.
The area around a McDonald’s parking lot, where the shooting occurred, was cordoned off with crime scene tape as investigators worked to piece together the events leading up to the incident. Witnesses reported seeing a heated argument between the man and his mother shortly before the shooting.
Allison Lake, who works at a nearby salon, described the swift response from law enforcement. “I saw an officer with his gun drawn, running through the parking lot,” she said, recounting the tense moments that followed the gunfire.
The deputy involved in the shooting was seen being taken away on a stretcher, though officials confirmed that neither he nor the man’s mother, who was also taken to the hospital, suffered gunshot wounds.
In line with protocol for officer-involved shootings, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has assumed control of the investigation to ensure an impartial review of the circumstances.
