A Colorado athletic trainer who claimed to be shaping teenage athletes into champions is instead heading to prison after a jury found he used his position to sexually assault the girls he coached.
On Thursday, a Douglas County jury convicted 51-year-old Aaron Thomas Carrado on six counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, part of what prosecutors called a disturbing pattern of abuse. The assaults happened between 2019 and 2022, when Carrado worked at the Strength in Christ gym in Parker, coaching elite high school athletes — including victims as young as 15 and 16.
“The defendant was entrusted to train Olympic-level high school athletes,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Danielle Jaramillo said. “Instead, he violated and betrayed them. These courageous survivors have shown that no title, no position, and no power can shield predators from justice.”
District Attorney George Brauchler said Carrado used his role as a trainer and “fake claims of Christianity” to lure victims while married with children. After the abuse came to light, he fled Colorado — but was tracked down and arrested in Montana in 2022.
The investigation began when Carrado’s ex-wife found disturbing notes and social media messages and alerted authorities. Now, after his conviction, he faces anywhere from eight years to life in prison when he’s sentenced on Nov. 13.
