Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. set the record straight Friday, blasting “the swamp” for spreading false rumors that he was plotting a 2028 presidential bid under President Donald Trump’s nose.
Kennedy took to X to dismiss the chatter and assure supporters that he is fully committed to Trump and the MAGA-aligned Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) agenda.
“The swamp is in full panic mode,” Kennedy wrote. “D.C. lobby shops are laboring fiercely to drive a wedge between President Trump and me, hoping to thwart our team from dismantling the status quo and advancing POTUS’ Make America Healthy Again agenda.”
Kennedy added that claims about him running for president in 2028 were “flat-out lies” and emphasized, “my loyalty is to President Trump and the mission we’ve started.”
The controversy centers on Kennedy’s close aides, particularly his principal deputy chief of staff and senior counselor, Stefanie Spear.
Spear served as Kennedy’s 2024 campaign press secretary and remains one of his most visible MAGA-aligned staffers. Laura Loomer, a high-profile Trump adviser, had called for Spear’s firing, citing concerns that she was secretly positioning Kennedy for another White House run.
Kennedy dismissed Loomer’s push as part of a broader effort to undermine his work at HHS, per the Daily Mail.
“Their attacks on my staff, especially Stefanie Spear—a fierce, loyal warrior for MAHA—are proof we’re over the target,” he wrote. Kennedy framed the attacks as a desperate attempt to shield entrenched interests in Washington from reform.
Spear has been a lightning rod for critics within conservative circles, with some questioning her past social media activity supporting Democratic causes. Despite the scrutiny, Kennedy maintains her role, crediting her with advancing MAHA initiatives aimed at reducing chronic disease and improving public health.
Kennedy’s political journey has been unconventional. He started his 2024 bid as a Democrat, following his family’s historic party ties, but switched to independent when it became clear he couldn’t beat incumbent President Joe Biden in the primary.
Last year, Kennedy threw his support behind President Trump, merging his MAHA movement with MAGA forces, a move that helped secure Trump’s victory over Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris.
The swirling 2028 rumors were partly fueled by a call involving hundreds of MAHA supporters, including comedian Russell Brand, where some interpreted discussions as signaling a future Kennedy campaign.
Kennedy aide Tony Lyons quickly refuted the claims, insisting Kennedy never indicated he planned to run again. “Secretary Kennedy never gave any indication that he was planning to run for president,” Lyons told the Daily Mail.
Kennedy stressed that his focus remains on reforming health policy and combating chronic disease.
“The president has made himself the answer to my 20-year prayer that God would put me in a position to end the chronic disease epidemic,” he wrote. “My team and I will do this until the day he leaves office.”
