Former President Barack Obama praised the group of Democrat lawmakers in Texas that recently fled the state in order to stop a vote on a bill they opposed.
Obama did so in a message that he posted to social media.
Take a look:
I am so proud of the @TexasHDC and the work that they’ve done. Their willingness to put themselves on the line to highlight the current assault on our democracy has set an example for what all of us have to do. https://t.co/jA2giVOMW1

Obama approves
Texas House Democrats revealed this week that Obama had privately met with them and had some words of praise for them for breaking quorum.
This was first revealed by Texas state Rep. Gene Wu, the chairman of the Texas House Democratic Caucus.
Alongside a photograph of a smiling Obama, Wu wrote:
Thank you President @BarackObamafor joining @TexasHDC members via Zoom and standing with Texas Democrats today! We are encouraged by your words and remain committed to fighting for democracy, in Texas & across the country.
It was subsequently confirmed by an Obama spokesperson that the former president did indeed meet with Democrat state lawmakers, and then Obama released a social media message of his own.
He wrote:
I am so proud of the @TexasHDC and the work that they’ve done. Their willingness to put themselves on the line to highlight the current assault on our democracy has set an example for what all of us have to do.
Something to be proud of?
Obama and Democrats are trying to claim that the fleeing of the state to block the vote on the redistricting bill was a way to ensure “free and fair elections.”
Fox News fills in the background of the situation, writing:
This comes amid a continued standoff between Texas Republicans and Democrats over an effort backed by President Donald Trump to pass a redistricting bill that would likely give the GOP five additional congressional seats. Over 50 Democratic members of the Texas House of Representatives fled the state to deny the legislature the quorum necessary to pass the bill.
Texas Republicans have responded with legal action, looking to force the lawmakers to return to the state. Other threats have been made against the Democrats as well, including their arrest and their removal from office.
Democrat lawmakers, who remain outside of the state, issued a statement on Thursday.
According to Fox News, the Democrats “announced they will only return to the state if the legislature agrees to adjourn without plans to meet again or if California introduces its own redistricting legislation to ‘neutralize’ the GOP seats gained in Texas.”
