Last week, the contamination of the judicial system by liberal activism hit a new low in Maryland. In Baltimore, a leftist judge outraged conservatives by rewarding a violent criminal with a slap on the wrist for brutally beating up two elderly men who voiced their opposition to abortion.
The crime took place in May 2023 outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in Biltmore, where two pro-life conservatives, Mark Crosby and Richard Schaefer, were peacefully protesting against the killing of unborn babies. The two men, one in his 70s and the other in his 80s, were physically assaulted and savagely beaten by 28-year-old Patrick Brice. The assault, which was caught on video, left Crosby seriously injured with multiple fractures and broken bones as well as a bloody face and temporary blindness in one eye.
Earlier this year, Brice was found guilty by the jury at his trial. The prosecution asked Baltimore Circuit Judge Yvette M. Bryant for a 10-year prison sentence. But the judge’s political bias was at play in full swing and she spared the violent attacker any jail time. Instead, Brice was sentenced to a year of home detention with three years’ probation and some mandatory anger management classes with therapy.
Judge Bryant’s sentencing was such an obvious reward to a criminal guilty of political violence that it sparked widespread criticism from conservatives and pro-life advocates. LifeSite News, which reports on pro-life and Christian conservative causes, reported that Judge Bryant did not allow Crosby to show his wounded eye to the jury during the trial and let Brice go with a slap on the wrist.
Calling out Judge Yvette M. Bryant for making such a mockery of justice, We The People Daily wrote (August 8) that instead of sending a strong message of deterrence to criminals, Judge Bryant sent the opposite message:
If you assault a pro-lifer in broad daylight, you’ll get a slap on the wrist—maybe a few restrictions on your travel plans. That’s what passes for accountability in a city run by soft-on-crime ideologues.
Judge Bryant was shamed on social media for siding with a vicious criminal out of her own political ideology. She was called a threat to the defenseless citizens of her jurisdiction.
Many conservative social media voices called for the resignation of Judge Bryant over such a shameful political ruling.
On his podcast, seasoned criminal defense attorney Andrew F. Branca showed a picture of Crosby’s bloodied face as photographed after the brutal assault. Branca strongly condemned Judge Bryant’s criminal-friendly sentencing and underscored that this is exactly what encourages more crime.
Baltimore has made news many times in the past for its endless crime problem under long-time Democrat-run administrations. In April 2024, Fox News reported on the rising incidence of crime owing to the lack of tough action by the authorities against criminals. The story wrote:
Out of 278 neighborhoods in Baltimore City, crime is up in almost every statistical category by nearly 80% in some neighborhoods, including auto theft, burglaries and aggravated assaults.
In July this year, the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) announced a notable decrease in violent crime in the city while acknowledging that “recent high-profile incidents” show the need for doing more. However, Fox News reported this week (August 13) that residents of several neighborhoods in Baltimore rejected the BPD’s claims of keeping crime in check. The story cited Sandra Seward, a resident of the Fed Hill area, as:
“If I hear one more time about our lower homicide rate, when we’re still the 4th most dangerous city in the country.”
