Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sparked headlines on Friday by saying she would consider nominating former President Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize if he brokers a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine that preserves Ukrainian territory.
Clinton made the comments during an appearance on the “Raging Moderates” podcast hosted by Jessica Tarlov. She stressed that any peace agreement must not force Ukraine to concede land to Russia.
“If President Trump were the architect of that, I’d nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize,” she said.
The remarks came as President Trump departed Washington, D.C., to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, for high-stakes peace talks. Trump emphasized that Ukraine would need to approve any territorial arrangements as part of the negotiations.
“I’m not here to negotiate for Ukraine. I’m here to get them at a table,” he said aboard Air Force One.
Trump has previously expressed interest in facilitating peace agreements around the world, including resolving conflicts between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and easing tensions between Israel and Iran. While he has posted about winning a Nobel Peace Prize in the past, he insists he is not actively campaigning for it.
Clinton’s unexpected suggestion surprised many, given her longstanding opposition to Trump, per the Daily Mail.
She explained that her goal is simply to avoid capitulation to Putin. “If he could end this terrible war without putting Ukraine in a position where it had to concede its territory… that could really stand up to Putin,” she said.
The Alaska summit represents a critical moment in the more-than-three-year-long war in Ukraine.
Both the U.S. and Russia are facing pressure to reach a resolution, and Trump’s involvement has drawn both praise and skepticism from political commentators.
In a major accomplishment that could pave the way for the Russia-Ukraine war to end, Putin revealed that an agreement was reached with Trump and the U.S. regarding the European conflict.
“I would like to hope the agreement we reached together… will pave the path towards peace in Ukraine,” the Russian president said.
Following his meeting with Putin, Trump rebuked the left’s false narrative that he colluded with the Russian government in 2016 to “steal” the presidential election from Clinton.
“We were interfered with by the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax… but he understood it… He’s seen it all… he knew it was a hoax, I knew it was a hoax. What was done was very criminal. But it made it harder for us to deal, as a country, in terms of business, and all of the things that we’d like to have dealt with,” Trump said, referring to Putin.
While Clinton’s remarks were conditional and focused on Ukraine’s sovereignty, they have already reignited discussions about the potential political and diplomatic impact of Trump’s foreign policy initiatives.
Analysts note that a successful peace deal could elevate Trump on the international stage, regardless of prior political divisions.
The former secretary of state’s comments also highlight the unusual scenario in which a former political rival publicly acknowledges the possibility of awarding a top international peace prize to Trump, contingent on specific outcomes.
