A man accused of throwing a Subway sandwich at a federal law enforcement officer in Washington, D.C., Sunday night, was an employee of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed. Sean Charles Dunn was employed in the international affairs section of the criminal division at the DOJ, NBC News reports.
“If you touch any law enforcement officer, we will come after you,” Bondi posted on X. “I just learned that this defendant worked at the Department of Justice — no longer. Not only is he fired, he has been charged with a felony,” Bondi posted on X.
The incident came on the heels of President Donald Trump federalizing the Washington, D.C. Metro Police Department.
Sandwich-throwing incident caught on viral video
D.C. U.S. Attorney General Jeanine Pirro announced Wednesday that Dunn is charged with assaulting an officer.
“When an individual went up to one of the federal law enforcement officers and started jumping up and down and screaming at him, berating him, yelling at him,” Pirro said in a video posted to X. “And then he took a Subway sandwich about this big and took it and threw it at the officer. He thought it was funny. Well, he doesn’t think it’s funny today because we charged him with a felony: assault on a police officer.”
The alleged assault happened Sunday, just after 11 p.m. and was captured on video, which has since gone viral online. Dunn began “beefing” with federal officers, yelling at them just inches away from their faces, calling them “f***ing fascists,” and asking them, “Why are you here? I don’t want you in my city!” Dunn then threw his deli sandwich at them, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday.
CBP agent struck; suspect apprehended
Video of the incident shows the sandwich hitting a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, in the chest. Dunn then tried running away but was quickly apprehended by law enforcement.
While being processed, Dunn allegedly told Metro police officers, “I did it. I threw a sandwich,” according to court documents.
Bondi also said, “This is an example of the deep state we have been up against for seven months as we work to refocus DOJ. You will not work in this administration while disrespecting our government and law enforcement.”
An attorney for Dunn has not released a comment.
