U.S. Border Patrol agents established a significant presence outside California Governor Gavin Newsom’s political rally in Los Angeles on Thursday, creating a tense atmosphere during the Democratic governor’s planned demonstration.
The federal agents conducted at least one arrest during their operations near the event, with video footage capturing the dramatic scene as onlookers gathered to witness the unfolding confrontation.
Newsom organized the gathering, which he termed “Liberation Day,” to outline his administration’s response to Republican redistricting efforts in Texas, marking another chapter in the ongoing political battle between state and federal authorities.
The California governor has emerged as a prominent critic of President Donald Trump and faces ongoing speculation about potential presidential ambitions, positioning himself as a leading voice of Democratic resistance to federal immigration enforcement policies.
Before the rally commenced, Newsom posted on social media that “Donald Trump and [Texas Governor] Greg Abbott are going to have a very bad day today,” setting an antagonistic tone for the day’s events.
Local Fox 11 affiliate captured video footage showing more than a dozen armed and masked Border Patrol agents positioned just outside the rally location, creating a scene that would quickly become a flashpoint for political controversy.
The recorded footage depicted agents escorting a handcuffed individual away from the area while bystanders voiced their displeasure, with angry shouts audible in the background as the arrest unfolded before cameras.
The visual of heavily armed federal agents operating in close proximity to a political rally immediately sparked debate about the appropriate use of federal law enforcement resources during partisan events.
Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino addressed the media presence, stating his agency was “here making Los Angeles a safer place,” defending the timing and scope of the federal operation.
Fox News reported that Bovino explained the federal operation by saying, “Since we won’t have politicians who will do that, we do that ourselves. So, that’s why we’re here today. As you can see, already making it a safer place,” directly criticizing local political leadership.
The Border Patrol chief emphasized the permanence of their operations, declaring, “We’re glad to be here, not going anywhere,” signaling continued federal enforcement efforts in the area regardless of local political opposition.
When questioned about his message to Governor Newsom, Bovino responded: “Again, we’re making Los Angeles a safer place, we’re going to continue to do that, and they can take that one to the bank and cash it,” delivering a pointed message to the California governor.
Newsom’s office responded to the federal agents’ presence with an emailed statement written entirely in capital letters: “WE WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY WEAK LITTLE DONALD TRUMP, THE CRIMINAL PRESIDENT!”
The governor’s press team posted on social media platform X during the event, claiming “TRUMP’S PRIVATE ARMY IS ILLEGALLY ON PRIVATE PROPERTY!!!!” suggesting the federal agents had exceeded their authority.
The accusations of illegal activity by federal agents added another layer of controversy to an already charged political situation, with both sides making competing claims about the legitimacy of the enforcement operation.
During his speech, Newsom directly addressed the federal agents’ presence, telling attendees, “Right outside at this exact moment are dozens and dozens of ICE agents,” drawing attention to the ongoing federal operation just beyond the rally perimeter.
The governor questioned the timing of the federal operation, asking his audience, “Do you think it’s coincidental?” implying that the Trump administration had deliberately scheduled enforcement activities to disrupt his political event.
The California governor continued his remarks by referencing Trump administration officials, stating, “Donald Trump and his minions, Tom Homan, tough guy. Decided, coincidentally or not, that this was a location to advance ICE arrests. Indiscriminate? Perhaps. we’ll find out later.”
The California governor delivered a warning to the nation during his speech, saying, “Wake up, America. this is a serious moment. Wake up to what’s going on. Wake up to the fear, anxiety. Wake up to what’s happening,” using repetitive language to emphasize his message.
Newsom described the scene in Los Angeles, declaring, “Not just here in Los Angeles, where we saw our streets militarized, where we saw our due process rights thrown out the window,” characterizing the federal presence as excessive and unconstitutional.
He characterized the federal presence as representative of broader policy direction, stating, “That’s Trump’s America. That’s the moment we’re living in. So, these are sober times,” positioning the incident within a national political narrative.
