Earlier this month, a group of Texas state Democrats fled their duties at the state’s Capitol to avoid voting on a game-changing redistricting bill, and while they were criticized by the right, they found support in high places within their party.
According to Fox News, the Texas Democrats who went AWOL have now returned to their duties, and received massive praise from former President Barack Obama, who called their fleeing act “inspiring.”
Not surprisingly, the Democrats in the group, including Texas state Rep. Gene Wu, were quick to thank Obama for his words.
Obama also reportedly met with the Texas state lawmakers in a Zoom call.
What happened?
Wu and his fellow state Democrats said they were “encouraged” by Obama’s words, and said they “remain committed to fighting for democracy, in Texas & across the country.”
It was reported by ABC News that Obama “lauded their fight against the Republican efforts to enact an even more egregious gerrymander in Texas ahead of the midterms.”
Fox News noted:
The spokesperson told the outlet that Obama “made clear that they are part of a bigger effort to protect free and fair elections and commended them for inspiring others with their actions.”
The two political sides in Texas continue to face off over the redistricting bill, which will likely give Republicans five extra seats.
Fox News noted:
This comes amid a continued standoff between Texas Republicans and Democrats over an effort backed by President Donald Trump to pass a redistricting bill that would likely give the GOP five additional congressional seats. Over 50 Democratic members of the Texas House of Representatives fled the state to deny the legislature the quorum necessary to pass the bill.
Texas Republicans have taken legal measures to compel the Democrats to perform their elected duties.
New terms
Dems have responded to the Republicans’ attempts to compel them to vote on the issue.
Fox News noted:
Texas House Democrats released a statement on Thursday in which they announced they will only return to the state if the legislature agrees to adjourn without plans to meet again or if California introduces its own redistricting legislation to “neutralize” the GOP seats gained in Texas.
So far, Republicans haven’t given in, and likely won’t give in until they get the redistricting vote official.
Only time will tell where it ends up, but it’s safe to say that this fight isn’t over.
