DURHAM, NC – A tragic incident unfolded at Camden Point Apartments on Monday, leaving a community in shock. London Powers, a junior at North Carolina Central University, was in the process of moving out from the apartment she shared with her ex-boyfriend, Damian Tinsley, when the unthinkable happened.
London’s close friend, Shyanne Boyd, described how London was eager to start anew, excited about finding her own place. The two had met during their freshman year and had grown close over the years. London had expressed determination never to repeat past mistakes in relationships, vowing to recognize warning signs early.
However, the hopeful future she envisioned was abruptly cut short. According to Shyanne, Damian, a former football player at Saint Agnes University, unexpectedly showed up at the apartment. What began as a brief argument quickly escalated.
In a desperate attempt to seek help, London dialed 911, only managing to convey her address and the presence of a gun before the line went silent. Shyanne recounted the harrowing moments when Damian shot London and then turned the gun on himself after firing a shot in Shyanne’s direction, which miraculously missed her.
The police arrived to find Damian deceased at the scene. London was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after. Shyanne, still reeling from the ordeal, expressed disbelief and sorrow for London’s family and friends.
London, who was studying social work and preparing for an internship at the Durham Center for Senior Life, also worked at a local Walgreens. Her sudden death has left a profound void among those who knew her, both at school and work.
The community is rallying together to remember London, with plans for a balloon release at the Walgreens on Holloway Street. The event aims to honor her memory and bring comfort to those grieving her loss.
