There has been tremendous growth in Satanism in America. No longer limited to large liberal cities, it now finds itself in small towns and rural areas where one would never think it possible.

There are many reasons for Satanism’s growth. However, one reason rarely cited is that children are prepared early to accept Satanism indirectly. This exposure is done right under the noses of parents.

The influence begins by introducing things that awaken sympathy for the devil. As toddlers, children have access to media and toys with a dark side.

Traditionally, children were marveled by an education dominated by the good, true and beautiful. All that is authentically good, true and beautiful speaks to the soul about God and His attributes. Exposure to these three transcendentals prepares the person for a life of virtue, honor and sanctity.

Satan hates God, and therefore despises all that is good, true and beautiful. He attempts to draw man away from the good, the true and the beautiful by encouraging man to choose that which is evil, false and ugly, which speaks to the soul about Satan.

Attracting children to Satan is not easy. The child has an innocence that is naturally repelled by the Satanic trilogy of the evil, false and ugly. However, this resistance can be overcome by repeatedly exposing the child to these influences as part of the dominant culture. When older, they can embrace that which tends toward the devil.

This tendency to reject the good, true and beautiful can be seen in the products that surround the young child. Cartoons, films and toys favorably portray ugly and repugnant characters, sometimes even as heroes and role models.

When children are fed a steady diet of these materials, they come to embrace ugliness, dishonesty, villainous behavior, vulgarity, and coarseness. The child opens a door through which the Satanic might later enter.

Deformed by years of exposure, these children can later make decisions as adolescents and adults that promote ever more radical manifestations of the evil, false and ugly. Satanism is one option that is on the horizon.

There are ways to protect children from the influences that lead to Satanism.

Parent should do everything to foster childhood innocence that prepares them for adulthood by attaching their souls to the good, true and beautiful. The innocent soul naturally rejects the Satanic view of the world.

This innocence must be reinforced by a good knowledge of the Ten Commandments, frequent reception of the sacraments, sacramentals and especially the Holy Rosary. Children should be encouraged to read good books, such as stories of saints, heroes and models with sound and uplifting morals. Parents should expose children to beautiful music, such as Gregorian chant and classical music. It is also good to have picture books or coffee table albums that contain beautiful images of various subjects.

Children would learn much more if parents made a point of speaking about the beautiful things around them and contrasting them with ugly things. In this way, the child will develop habits of analysis and not accept the ugliness that the culture thrusts upon them for acceptance without explanation.

Thus, encourage the child to distinguish good from evil and to learn that life is a battle which all must fight on the way to sanctification and heaven. There is no sitting it out in this warfare.

Fallen human nature constantly invites everyone to tend toward that which is evil. However, assisted by grace, the sacraments and a good formation, the child can be compelled to seek the honor and glory of God. The child can then be prepared, while still young, to reject Satan and all his works, large or small.
