A tense exchange between President Donald Trump and former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev escalated into nuclear threats from Moscow, signaling an escalation in the Ukraine conflict.
Escalating threats

The latest dispute began with a post from Trump on Truth Social in which he warned Medvedev to “watch his words,” calling him a “failed former President of Russia” and accusing him of “entering very dangerous territory.” Trump’s warning came after Medvedev dismissed the president’s newly shortened deadline for Russia to reach a peace deal in Ukraine.
Russia’s ‘Dead Hand’

Hours later, Medvedev escalated the exchange by referencing the infamous “Dead Hand” system — a Cold War-era Soviet nuclear command mechanism allegedly designed to launch a strike if Russian leadership were wiped out. “Let him remember his favorite movies about ‘The Walking Dead,’ as well as how dangerous the non-existent in nature ‘Dead Hand’ can be,” he said. While it was never confirmed by the Russian government, the Dead Hand was reported in 2011 by a retired commander of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces who claimed it could be reactivated if needed.
Political reactions

The online sparring followed remarks from Senator Lindsey Graham, who warned that anyone undermining Trump “will soon be sadly mistaken.” Graham’s statement followed Trump’s decision to shorten his peace deadline from 50 days to just 10 to 12 days. He also warned that Russia would face sweeping “secondary tariffs” if a ceasefire is not reached. “It’s not for you or Trump to dictate when to ‘get at the peace table,’” Medvedev fired back.
Russia’s warning

In another post, Medvedev accused Trump of pushing the U.S. closer to conflict. “Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia. … Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country,” he wrote. “Don’t go down the Sleepy Joe road!” Trump has consistently blamed former President Joe Biden for the ongoing war in Ukraine. “This war has been going on for three years. It’s a war that would have never happened if I was president. It’s Biden’s war,” he reportedly told Time magazine earlier this year.
