European leaders are confident in President Donald Trump as he makes his way to his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, Politico reported Thursday.
Leaders such as German Chancellor Frederich Merz, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa and other officials briefed on a Wednesday call between Trump and European counterparts told Politico that they were confident in Trump’s ability to negotiate at the summit in Anchorage, Alaska, saying the call had a “positive atmosphere,” according to Politico. Trump reportedly agreed to not agree to territorial considerations at the summit during a phone call Wednesday, with the president mainly aiming to gauge Putin’s future willingness to pursue peace.
“We are all on the same page,” Siliņa told Politico. “President Trump is an excellent and unique negotiator, so I believe he aims for the best possible outcomes of the talks.”
Merz also said that Trump “largely shares” the positions of European leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron and European Council President António Costa, according to Politico.
Ukrainian officials were reportedly concerned that Trump would give in to some of Putin’s most aggressive demands at the summit, but have since had their fears allayed by the Wednesday phone call, according to Politico. Moreover, the leaders were also reportedly impressed with Vice President JD Vance, saying the VP was “looking for solutions while being clear that Putin is the bad guy here,” once official told Politico.
Putin indicated that he would accept a ceasefire in Ukraine if Kiev cedes the primarily Russian-speaking Donbas region to Russia. However, Ukraine has pushed back against any such territorial concessions.
Russia, in the time before the summit, has made considerable gains on the ground in the Donetsk region inside the Donbas.
Trump has made numerous peace deals around the world since taking office in January, most recently securing a historic peace deal on August 8 between Azerbaijan and Armenia, two countries that have been warring on and off for the better part of three decades.
The White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
