If former President Barack Obama were eligible to seek a third term, he would defeat President Donald Trump by a double-digit margin, according to a new poll. The results come amid renewed political debate over presidential term limits, imagining a scenario prohibited by the 22nd Amendment, which bars presidents from serving more than two terms.
The poll results

The Daily Mail and J.L. Partners survey, which polled 1,013 registered voters, found Obama leading Trump 52% to 41% in a hypothetical matchup. The 11-point lead is significantly greater than the poll’s plus or minus 3.1 percentage point margin of error. Obama showed strength among Hispanic voters, with 73% support, and Black voters, with 68%. Among independents, Obama held a narrower edge, 50% to Trump’s 39%, but still led by a significant margin.
Other Democrats perform worse

Although Obama defeated Trump in the poll, it showed that other Democratic contenders would not hold up as well. The poll found that Trump would narrowly defeat other prominent Democrats in hypothetical rematches. Trump held slim leads over both former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Joe Biden, showing that other contenders struggled in comparison.
Why neither can run again

Despite their continued political influence, both Obama and Trump are constitutionally barred from seeking another term. The 22nd Amendment prohibits any individual from being elected president more than twice. Changing the amendment requires a two-thirds supermajority in the chambers of Congress and ratification by at least 38 state legislatures.
Third term rumors

Trump, in an earlier interview with NBC News, hinted at ongoing speculation surrounding a third term. “A lot of people want me to do it. But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.” Obama, speaking in 2015 during a visit to Ethiopia, firmly dismissed the idea, saying, “There’s a lot that I’d like to do to keep America moving. But the law is the law, and no person is above the law, not even the president.”
