NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” achieved its highest viewership numbers since late 2023 when Fox News personality Greg Gutfeld appeared as a guest last week.
The appearance marked a significant milestone for the struggling late-night program that has faced increasing competition in recent years.
The Aug. 7 broadcast attracted 1.7 million viewers according to Nielsen live-plus-same day measurements.
This figure represents the largest audience the late-night program has secured since December 19, 2023.
Gutfeld shared the guest lineup with the Jonas Brothers and musical performers Good Charlotte during the Wednesday evening telecast.
The trio of high-profile guests generated significant viewer interest for the NBC program.
The December 2023 episode that previously held the viewership record featured actor Bradley Cooper, lifestyle mogul Martha Stewart, and musical duo Rufus and Martha Wainwright.
Nielsen’s measurements for both episodes excluded any lead-in boost from live sports programming.
The strong performance of the Aug. 7 show elevated the entire week’s ratings for “The Tonight Show.”
The week of Aug. 4 averaged 1.2 million viewers across all episodes.
This weekly average marked the program’s best performance since the week of May 19.
The Wrap reported that during that same successful week, Fallon welcomed several other notable personalities to Studio 6B.
Actor Chris Pratt appeared alongside Broadway composer Lin-Manuel Miranda and comedian Seth Rogen.
Additional guests throughout the week included actress Rose Byrne, television host Jordan Klepper and supermodel Heidi Klum.
Resist the Mainstream noted back in April that Gutfeld is expanding his television portfolio by stepping into the game show arena with a political twist.
The three-part series features a unique premise: four contestants were completely isolated from the outside world for three months following President Donald Trump’s second inauguration.
Participants are said to have had zero access to phones, television, internet or social media during the period of Jan. 20 through April 13.
FOX Nation President Lauren Petterson expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Truth can be stranger than fiction and who better to help isolated Americans catch up on the headlines they missed during an unprecedented news cycle than Greg Gutfeld.”
“We are excited for FOX Nation subscribers to have exclusive access to America’s most-watched late night host’s game show debut as he informs contestants about what really happened while they were completely off the grid and isolated from the outside world,” Petterson added.
The format will showcase Gutfeld presenting contestants with news scenarios ranging from the bizarre to the plausible, Fox News outlined at the time.
Gutfeld, who co-hosts Fox’s “The Five,” made headlines last year for voicing his frustration with what he perceives as a media blackout on a staggering security breach at the southern border.
The host’s outrage came after reports of over 425,000 convicted criminals, including more than 13,000 murderers and 15,000 rapists, entering the country then subsequently disappearing from official radar.
“You have the release of hundreds of thousands of foreign criminals … thousands of rapists, thousands of murderers, and on the pages of all of these networks, the death of Maggie Smith … Lana Del Rey’s marriage, P. Diddy rumors, but nothing about what is easily … the biggest crime story I’ve ever seen,” Gutfeld stated during a broadcast.
Gutfeld’s remarks prompted Elon Musk to chime in on the matter, posting, “the scale of the deception is jawdropping.”
