Washington D.C. witnesses a dramatic escalation in federal intervention as President Trump deploys armed military personnel to patrol the nation’s capital around the clock.
The president has authorized hundreds of National Guard troops to take control of city streets, with officials confirming that between 100 and 200 soldiers will maintain continuous patrols throughout the district.
Colonel Dave Butler announced the expanded military presence as part of Trump’s comprehensive plan to address what the administration characterizes as emergency-level criminal activity in the capital, per reports.
President Trump declared victory over local governance through his Truth Social platform Wednesday evening, stating that the federal government has assumed control of the city.
“D.C. has been under siege from thugs and killers, but now, D.C. is back under Federal Control where it belongs. The White House is in charge,” Trump wrote in his social media post.
The president promised that military forces and police would work together to transform the city’s conditions and restore safety to residents.
“The Military and our Great Police will liberate this City, scrape away the filth, and make it safe, clean, habitable and beautiful once more!” Trump declared.
Citizens responded to the military deployment with street demonstrations, gathering to voice opposition to the federal intervention.
Protesters assembled throughout the city, directing chants of “Go home, fascists” and “Get off our streets” toward the deployed forces.
Law enforcement established vehicle checkpoints along major thoroughfares, including the heavily trafficked 14th Street Northwest corridor.
Demonstrators positioned themselves at checkpoint locations, attempting to redirect vehicle traffic while demanding officers remove protective face coverings.
Trump initially announced his intervention strategy Monday, describing the mission as an effort to “rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor.”
The administration has consistently maintained that criminal activity in Washington DC has reached crisis levels requiring immediate federal response.
District leadership disputes these characterizations, citing statistical evidence showing violent crime has dropped to thirty-year lows following a temporary increase two years prior.
Military personnel began appearing in small groups across various city locations over recent days before Wednesday’s significant expansion of visible presence.
National Guard representatives confirmed to the Associated Press that troops would begin executing additional operational duties Thursday.
Federal agencies coordinated patrol activities Wednesday, with Homeland Security Investigations agents working the U Street corridor while Drug Enforcement Administration officers maintained presence on the National Mall.
DEA personnel joined Metropolitan Police Department officers for joint patrols in the Navy Yard area, while FBI agents stationed themselves along Massachusetts Avenue.
Tuesday night operations involving 1,450 federal and local officers resulted in 43 arrests, representing a substantial increase from approximately 24 arrests the previous evening.
Arrest charges included suspected driving under the influence, unlawful entry and outstanding warrants for assault with deadly weapons, according to White House reporting.
Officers confiscated seven illegal firearms during the Tuesday night sweep, adding to the growing tally of weapons removed from circulation.
White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers confirmed that total arrests have exceeded 100 since Trump initiated the enhanced federal law enforcement presence last week.
The Daily Mail outlined that the president indicated potential expansion of federal control duration and suggested congressional involvement in modifying city ordinances the administration considers inadequate.
“We’re gonna do this very quickly. But we’re gonna want extensions. I don’t want to call a national emergency. If I have to, I will,” Trump stated.
Police Chief Pamela Smith acknowledged staffing challenges during her Fox affiliate interview, noting the Metro Police Department operates nearly 800 officers below capacity.
Smith expressed appreciation for federal agent assistance in addressing the personnel shortage, at least temporarily.
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser characterized the federal intervention as “authoritarian” while describing her meeting with Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Bowser reported that city officials received no specific objectives for the federal surge during discussions with Trump administration representatives.
Despite her criticism, the mayor acknowledged positive aspects of increased law enforcement presence and weapons confiscation efforts.
“I think they regard it as a success to have more presence and take more guns off the street, and we do too,” Bowser said, according to Daily Mail reporting.
Trump hinted Monday that similar federal interventions could extend to additional major metropolitan areas across the country.
The president specifically identified Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Baltimore and Oakland as potential targets for future federal law enforcement operations.
“This will go further,” Trump announced. “We’re going to take back our capital … and then we’ll look at other cities also.”
