Costco Wholesale Corp. has announced it will not dispense the abortion pill mifepristone at its U.S. pharmacies, a decision hailed by pro-life advocates as a significant victory
The abortion pill has been responsible for killing millions of babies and killing and injuring countless women.
The retail giant’s decision comes amid pressure from Christian investors and pro-life organizations urging major retailers to refrain from distributing the abortion drug.
Costco confirmed it would not sell mifepristone, aligning with other major retailers like Walmart, Kroger, and Albertsons, which have also declined to sell the deadly pills.

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life Action, celebrated the move, stating, “Costco’s decision not to sell abortion pills is a major win for life. It sends a powerful message that not every corporation is willing to profit from the destruction of unborn lives.”
Hawkins emphasized the broader implications, noting that chemical abortion pills, which account for over 60% of abortions in the U.S., pose risks to both women and the environment.
“Chemical abortion pills represent the largest abortion threat that American women and babies face – a poisonous cocktail that not only takes lives but can harm the environment,” she said.
The decision follows a campaign by Students for Life Action and other pro-life groups targeting retailers to reject mifepristone.
A faith-based investment group, holding $172 million in shares across Costco, Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons, and McKesson Corp., sent letters to these companies warning of reputational and legal risks associated with selling the drug. The pressure appears to have resonated, with Costco’s choice emboldening pro-life advocates to continue their push against other retailers.
“We are thrilled that Costco has chosen to prioritize life and avoid the moral and legal complications of distributing abortion pills,” said Kristi Hamrick, vice president of Students for Life of America. “This is a step toward protecting both the unborn and the health of women who might otherwise face the dangers of these drugs.”
Mifepristone, used in combination with misoprostol, is employed in medication abortions, which have become increasingly common since the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Pro-life groups argue that the drug’s availability through pharmacies risks exacerbating environmental concerns, claiming that trace amounts of the medication could contaminate waterways.
“These drugs contain dangerous endocrine disruptors, which are making their way into America’s waterways through human remains, despite EPA warnings not to flush drugs,” Hawkins said.
While Costco’s decision has been met with praise from pro-life advocates, it has drawn criticism from abortion supporters.
