Over the past three administrations, the FBI has increasingly raised concerns among conservatives and libertarians for engaging in illegal and politically motivated schemes to hurt pro-America causes and even undermine the first Trump administration. As the second Trump presidency has completed its first 6 months, previously hidden or suppressed details of the bureau’s shady activities are coming out, once again raising the question among some conservatives: should the FBI be dismantled altogether?
Prominent conservative voice Tom Fitton, President of Judicial Watch, thinks it’s time to get rid of the FBI because it is thoroughly and helplessly corrupt. Last week, Fitton reposted his video from June 4 showing him emphatically stating that the FBI needs to be shut down because it cannot be expected to fairly investigate itself or the Department of Justice (DOJ) of which it is a part. Fitton used a short and simple line to renew his call for dismantling the FBI.
Fitton’s call comes amid the raging scandal of the FBI’s collusion with the Democrats, and including what hardcore conservatives view as deep state-affiliated Republicans (the RINOs), during the 2016 election cycle to undermine Trump’s potential victory over Hillary Clinton. Trump’s current Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard has recently declassified a trove of official documents revealing the Obama admin’s intelligence agencies, mainly the FBI and CIA, playing an active role in plotting against Donald Trump’s presidency – the infamous Russia-collusion hoax propagated by leftist media and Democrats.
The reaction of the MAGA base has been divided mainly between two kinds – those like Tom Fitton who believe the FBI is too corrupt to be reformed and hence must be dismantled as against those who believe that putting a few good people in charge of these federal agencies will fix the problem and the agencies can be drained of bad actors by simply firing them. The former segment of MAGA felt their position was validated after Trump’s DOJ and FBI leadership jointly announced that there was no Epstein client list and Epstein had committed suicide in 2019 in a federal prison in NY without any foul play involved.
But since Gabbard’s reopening of the Russia-collusion case, which some firebrand conservative commentators call a distraction by the Trump administration from the Epstein files debacle, those calling for dismantling the FBI remain unconvinced about the bureau’s transformation. In fact, they feel that these revelations only go to show how the bureau has become corrupt beyond any real repair.
Another important factor in strengthening the conviction that the FBI is irredeemable is the lack of actual accountability and the continued incidence of leaks happening under the nose of Trump’s DNI. Texan conservative Luke Taylor posted a thread of Gabbard’s interview clips with popular conservative podcaster Megyn Kelly from their recent interview, wherein Kelly asked about the leaks of classified material to the media and other schemes of the intel community that go against the country’s interests. Taylor wrote: “End the FBI . Just turn out the lights. Close them down. For good.”
Other conservatives have called for abolishing the FBI every now and then over the bureau’s many failures, cover-ups, and schemes against conservatives.
