Residents of a quiet Melbourne suburb are reeling after the brutal murders of a pregnant woman and her partner inside their home.
On August 11, police discovered the bodies of Athena Georgopoulos, 39, and Andrew Gunn, 50, in their Mount Waverley apartment. Local outlets report that Georgopoulos, who was five months pregnant, was found next to Gunn — whose death was especially gruesome, with shocking details including alleged decapitation and graffiti scrawled inside the property.
Neighbor Ben Scott-Sandvik, who lives in the same building, said the scene was something no one should ever have to witness. Another neighbor, Dimmi, shared that she had known Athena as a child and was close to her mother, but hadn’t seen her in nearly a year. “She was a lovely girl. A very nice girl. I’m so, so sad,” she said.
Athena’s mother, Petty Georgopoulos, later posted a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, writing in Greek, “I will not cease to always love you… until we meet again my daughter, in the angel’s light.”
Police arrested 34-year-old Ross Judd — who is unhoused — at Westall train station just hours after the discovery. Authorities say Judd appeared to have known the couple, though they have not revealed the nature of that relationship. At the time of his arrest, reports say Judd had blood on his shirt. He has since been charged with two counts of murder and appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.
The killings have left longtime residents shaken. Many say Adrienne Crescent has always been a peaceful street, and the violent nature of the crime is something they never imagined happening in their community.
