President Donald Trump has announced his intention to nominate Tammy Bruce, a former Fox News personality and current State Department spokeswoman, to the position of deputy representative to the United Nations.
The appointment, which requires U.S. Senate confirmation, would place Bruce directly under Mike Waltz, Trump’s former national security advisor.
Waltz is awaiting his own confirmation to serve as the administration’s chief U.N. ambassador.
Both nominations will move forward in the coming weeks.
Bruce, 62, joined the State Department earlier this year.
She has served as the department’s public face in press briefings and official statements, often taking a firm stance against questions she considered unfair.
Her tenure in the role has been marked by an assertive style and unconventional tactics, including rearranging the seating of reporters in the briefing room without notice.
President Trump praised Bruce in a Truth Social post, calling her a “Great Patriot, Television Personality, and Bestselling Author.”
He credited her with serving “with distinction” since the start of his second term.
“Tammy Bruce will represent our Country brilliantly at the United Nations. Congratulations Tammy!” Trump wrote.
The deputy representative to the United Nations plays a central role in shaping U.S. positions on major international issues.
The position involves assisting the ambassador during Security Council meetings, engaging with other nations’ diplomats and participating in negotiations on resolutions and policy initiatives.
It remains unclear who will succeed Bruce as State Department spokesperson.
Her deputy, Tommy Pigott, is a former spokesman for the Republican National Committee and could be among the candidates considered for the role.
Before entering the Trump administration, Bruce was a well-known conservative commentator on Fox News.
She regularly defended administration policies on-air and provided commentary on political developments.
Her television work made her a familiar figure among conservative audiences nationwide.
Bruce’s political career began on the opposite end of the spectrum.
She was once a Democratic activist and served as president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women.
Over time, she became a critic of the Democratic Party and shifted her political alignment.
The Washington Post reported that she spoke publicly about her departure from the left during the rise of the Tea Party movement.
Her nomination continues a broader trend of Trump administration appointments involving figures from conservative media.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, also a former Fox News host, is one of the most prominent examples.
Hegseth joined the administration early in Trump’s second term after years in broadcasting and military service.
Last week, former judge and Fox contributor Jeanine Pirro was sworn in as U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia.
Pirro has held the position since her appointment in May and has a career background that includes work as a prosecutor and television personality.
Dan Bongino, who served as the FBI’s deputy director, left Fox News in 2023 to focus on launching an online program. He later joined the Trump administration in an official capacity.
Former Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, now serving as Trump’s director of national intelligence, was a Fox contributor from 2022 until her appointment.
Her career path included military service and multiple terms in Congress before transitioning to media and then the intelligence role.
Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy is another former Fox host who entered the administration.
He previously co-hosted the Fox Business program “The Bottom Line” before being tapped for the cabinet position. His wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, continues to co-host “Fox & Friends Weekends” on the network.
