Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is concerned that President Donald Trump taking action on rampant crime would “destabilize” his city.
In a statement on Monday, Johnson lamented that the president cut funding for “violence prevention programs” in his city, saying that more direct measures to address crime would “destabilize” Chicago.
“From my first day in office, public safety has been my top priority. In just two years, we have made historic progress, driving down homicides by more than 30% and reducing shootings by almost 40% in the last year alone,” the mayor said. “Last week, we learned that President Trump cut another $158 million in funding for violence prevention programs in cities like Chicago. These cuts are on top of the Trump administration dismantling the Office of Gun Violence Prevention and terminating more than $800 million in grants for anti-violence programs across the country.“
“If President Trump wants to help make Chicago safer, he can start by releasing the funds for anti-violence programs that have been critical to our work to drive down crime and violence. Sending in the National Guard would only serve to destabilize our city and undermine our public safety efforts,” the statement ends.
Johnson was referring to Trump calling out his city during an announcement regarding his actions in Washington, D.C., which include mobilizing nearly 800 National Guard troops.
“Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs, and homeless people, and we’re not going to let it happen anymore. We’re not going to take it,” the president said.
Trump will be using the District of Columbia Home Rule Act’s Section 740 to take over the Metropolitan Police Department.

Mayor 6.6 needs to show Chicagoans that his anti-violence programs actually prevents violence.
When local residents don’t believe this works, he’s wasting valuable time trying to get the President’s attention to release these funds.
