President Donald Trump prepared to deploy up to 1,000 National Guard troops across Washington DC streets as federal agents conducted arrests throughout Sunday night.
The deployment announcement was scheduled for a White House press conference on Monday as Trump advanced his federal takeover initiative amid an intensified anti-crime campaign.
Trump issued a stern warning on Truth Social stating, “Be prepared! There will be no ‘MR. NICE GUY.’ We want our Capital BACK.”
Sunday night photographs captured multiple federal agencies coordinating operations, including FBI and Border Patrol personnel working in unison across the capital.
Law enforcement detained one individual along U Street with FBI and Border Patrol agents providing assistance during the arrest.
Drug Enforcement Agency agents maintained security positions in Dupont Circle, located a short distance from the U Street incident.
The president had already deployed 120 FBI agents to collaborate with DC police and other federal law enforcement officers during night shift operations throughout the city, per reports.
US officials confirmed to NBC4 Washington that Trump was evaluating the National Guard mobilization of 1,000 troops for Monday deployment.
The White House maintained discretion regarding specific details while indicating Trump’s readiness to act. One official told NBC News, “We won’t get ahead of the President on any potential announcements, but the President has been clear that all options are on the table when it comes to making DC safe again.”
Trump utilized his Truth Social platform for several days to preview the federal crackdown, promising a significant Monday announcement regarding his anti-crime strategy.
The president characterized the capital’s current state on Sunday, writing, “It has become one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the World. It will soon be one of the safest!!!”
Trump compared his DC plans to his administration’s stringent immigration enforcement measures at the southern border.
The president pledged to “immediately clear out the city’s homeless population and take swift action against crime” while promising to “make our Capital safer and more beautiful than it ever was before.”
Trump posted that the transformation would occur rapidly, stating, “It’s all going to happen very fast, just like the Border.”
The president declared on Tuesday night via Truth Social, “We’re going to have to federalize DC and run it the way it’s supposed to be run.”
Trump told reporters the following day, “The rate of crime, the rate of muggings, killings and everything else – we’re not going to let it… and that includes bringing in the National Guard, maybe very quickly, too.”
DC police data indicates violent crime decreased 26 percent compared to the same period in 2024, according to Daily Mail reporting.
Washington DC Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser countered Trump’s assessment during a Sunday MSNBC interview, asserting the capital was “not experiencing a crime spike.”
Bowser acknowledged on The Weekend program, “It is true that we had a terrible spike in crime in 2023, but this is not 2023.”
The mayor suggested Trump overstated the necessity for troop deployment since the District lacks the crime surge Trump described.
Bowser recounted her recent Oval Office conversation with Trump where they discussed capital crime issues.
Trump addressed homelessness concerns alongside crime issues, confirming 120 FBI agents would collaborate with DC police and federal law enforcement for a minimum one-week period.
The president posted on Truth Social, “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital. The Criminals, you don’t have to move out. We’re going to put you in jail where you belong.”
Two US officials confirmed Trump had not finalized the deployment decision, though troops remained prepared for mobilization.
The FBI street patrol assignment differs significantly from agents’ typical responsibilities in counterintelligence, public corruption and specialized divisions.
Most agents lack training for traffic stops and other potentially hazardous street encounters.
FBI reinforcements from Philadelphia and other locations outside Washington will supplement local staffing increases.
The Trump administration has not consulted the DC police department regarding FBI agent deployment strategies, according to The Washington Post.
Trump’s capital improvement initiative includes evicting homeless individuals from the nation’s capital while incarcerating criminals, despite Mayor Bowser’s assertion that no current crime spike exists.
