President Donald Trump has relocated former President Barack Obama’s official portrait to a section of the White House that remains off-limits to most visitors, according to reports from CNN on Sunday.
The Obama portrait now hangs at the top of the Grand Staircase within the White House, positioned alongside portraits of former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.
This area typically remains inaccessible to White House visitors during tours.
CNN obtained photographic evidence showing Obama’s portrait in its new location.
The relocation represents the second time Trump has moved the portrait since returning to office.
Trump initially moved the Obama portrait in April, replacing it with a photograph depicting the immediate aftermath of the assassination attempt he survived in Butler, Pennsylvania in July 2024.
The portrait’s relocation comes amid renewed scrutiny of Obama’s national security team and their actions during the 2016 election period.
Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard released documents and a memo on July 18 containing allegations against Obama’s administration.
Gabbard’s memo detailed what she characterized as evidence that Obama’s national security team “manufactured and politicized intelligence” as part of what she described as a “years-long coup” against Trump following his 2016 victory over Hillary Clinton.
During a White House press briefing on July 23, Gabbard announced she had referred Obama to the Justice Department for potential criminal charges related to what she termed the “Russiagate” hoax.
Gabbard stated that Obama led “the manufacturing” of intelligence assessments claiming Russia interfered in the 2016 election to benefit Trump’s campaign.
The intelligence community’s assessment of Russian interference has faced renewed examination following investigations into its origins and methodology.
Special Counsel John Durham released his comprehensive report in May 2023 investigating the origins of the FBI’s probe into alleged collusion between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia.
Durham’s investigation concluded that the FBI “did not and could not corroborate” the allegations contained within the now-discredited Steele Dossier, which federal investigators used to obtain surveillance warrants.
The Steele Dossier served as justification for monitoring communications involving Carter Page and other Trump associates during the 2016 election period.
FBI analyst Brian Auten provided testimony during an October 2022 trial revealing that the FBI offered former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele one million dollars to substantiate his dossier’s claims.
Auten testified that Steele never provided corroboration for the allegations contained in his dossier despite the substantial financial incentive offered by federal investigators.
The Daily Caller outlined that recent developments have expanded the scope of investigations into former Obama administration officials involved in the Russia investigation.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey to federal investigators in July.
The FBI launched a criminal investigation into both former officials for allegedly providing false statements to Congress during their testimony about the Russia investigation.
Brennan addressed the investigation during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House,” denying any wrongdoing to host Nicolle Wallace.
Brennan told Wallace that the CIA “stayed true” to its mission and did not attempt to influence the 2016 election during his tenure under the Obama administration.
The portrait relocation occurs as Trump’s administration continues reviewing actions taken by previous administrations regarding intelligence assessments and investigations targeting his campaign and presidency.
