An attempted rebrand of the Deep State found some familiar players among those decrying the “purge” at the FBI while dubbing its leaders “unqualified political loyalists.”
In recent weeks, concern over an alleged “treasonous conspiracy” has seen an increasing number of declassified documents pointing to then-President Barack Obama’s administration as seemingly pivotal in perpetrating the Russia conspiracy hoax on the American people.
After FBI Director Kash Patel removed three senior officials over purported misconduct, a group of more than 300 former national security officials calling themselves The Steady State penned an open letter decrying the actions with comparisons to foreign regimes.
“It is not about reform. It is about control. The aim, it seems, is to transform the FBI from a respected, constitutionally grounded investigative service into a personal enforcement arm of a political figure,” asserted the Saturday letter from the group that includes some of the 51 signatories who’d claimed Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian disinformation before the 2020 presidential election.
It also decried Patel and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino as “unqualified political loyalists … whose resumes do not meet the basic standards for leadership of the world’s premier law enforcement agency.”

Having touted their own supposedly “nonpartisan” backgrounds working for the CIA, Defense Department, Department of Homeland Security, FBI, NSA, State Department, and as uniformed military, The Steady State specifically noted the firings of so-called “seasoned FBI leaders” in now-former agents Brian Driscoll, Michael Feinberg, and Walter Giardina.
“They appear part of a broader campaign to dismantle the FBI’s long-standing independence and recast it as a tool of political loyalty. That such dismissals are reportedly tied to perceived personal disloyalty to former President Donald Trump is profoundly alarming,” alleged the letter.
As had been reported, the stated reason for Giardina’s termination was “poor judgment and a lack of impartiality in carrying out duties, leading to the political weaponization of the government” after he was alleged to have, among other things, once instructed fellow agents to “dig around” on Trump by using a false justification.
Meanwhile, accusations against Driscoll, who temporarily served as acting FBI director, included alleged “insubordination” for reportedly opposing efforts to provide then-acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove information about FBI agents who’d investigated J6ers.
“We have seen these dynamics abroad–leaders who demand loyalty from security services not to the law, but to themselves,” contended the letter. “These regimes do not end well. The FBI has long been a bulwark against such corruption: an institution where rule of law and civil liberties are held in the balance with the demands of national security. Its independence is not a bureaucratic feature; it is a democratic necessity.”
The group that concluded the letter, “Your integrity matters. Your courage matters. The nation is watching, and will be inspired by the FBI. And history will remember,” was the same group that chose Independence Day to post a message that looked every bit like classic propaganda with the message, “There’s no ‘Deep State.’ But there is a Steady State: experienced, patriotic public servants defending democracy. We’re former [national security] officials taking action against rising threats.”
