GRAND RAPIDS, MI – In a poignant scene at the Kent County Courthouse, Marcus Lofton was sentenced to more than two decades in prison for the murder of his estranged wife, Alicia Lofton. The sentencing follows a tragic sequence of events that unfolded just a day after Alicia served him with divorce papers, ending their brief six-month marriage.
The courtroom was filled with emotion as family members of Alicia expressed their grief and anger. Marcus had initially faced trial in May, but it ended in a mistrial. Later, he accepted a plea deal, admitting guilt to charges of felony firearm possession and second-degree murder.
Alicia’s family, including her aunt Jennifer Lee, openly criticized Marcus, expressing their disapproval of him. “He was never introduced to the family because he was an embarrassment,” Lee stated, reflecting the family’s long-standing disdain for him.
Arthur Joseph, Alicia’s father, did not hold back his feelings, describing Marcus in harsh terms. “My daughter introduced me to him once, and I disliked him immediately,” Joseph said. He lamented the hidden nature of Alicia’s marriage, which she concealed due to her family’s disapproval.
Alicia’s daughter also addressed Marcus directly, her gaze unwavering. “You took my biggest supporter away from me,” she said, emphasizing the lasting impact of his actions. Her words underscored the deep sense of loss felt by those who loved Alicia.
Despite claims from Lofton’s attorney about his remorse, the judge handed down a sentence of two years for the firearm charge, followed by 25 to 50 years for second-degree murder, as stipulated in the plea agreement.
Judge Scott A. Nodo concluded the proceedings by echoing the sentiments expressed by Alicia’s father, leaving Marcus with a somber reminder of the gravity of his actions.
Lofton will receive credit for nearly two years already served. The case highlights the devastating effects of domestic violence, prompting reminders about resources available for those in similar situations.
