California News:
“Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?” The Eagles, 1973.
“Make no mistake about it, California is moving forward,” California Governor Gavin Newsom said Friday while trying to convince everyone that he’s not desperately subverting the California Constitution over his redistricting scheme. “We believe in an independent commission — we’re not getting rid of it — but what we’re talking about is an emergency redistricting response to a rigging by Trump and Texas Republicans.”
Oh really?
“Desperado, oh, you ain’t gettin’ no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they’re drivin’ you home”
As we reported Friday, “California Governor Gavin Newsom announced his intentions last week to blow up California’s independent redistricting commission, illegally tampering with the state’s electoral maps mid-decade… because TRUMP.” as the Globe reported earlier this week.
Newsom made this announcement as Texas continues with their current plans for a mid-decade redistricting. But Newsom is conflating his political desires for Democrats to win the midterm elections with actual federal law and Texas working to bring its districts in line with federal law and court decisions.
“Donald Trump is tipping the scales of justice toward injustice for us all – he realizes his agenda is so unpopular that he’d rather rig the next election and prevent voters from holding him accountable and provide a check on his deeply unpopular policies,” Gov. Newsom breathlessly proclaimed. And then the little big man added, “California stands ready to flex its muscle to ensure the integrity of our democracy nationwide.”
Whoa. Gavin Newsom is going to flex his muscle. Let’s hope he lifts more than Rep. Eric Swalwell’s 135 lb. bench press stunt, which I can lift, and only involves having one pair of 45 pound plates on the bar. This is considered to be a novice level milestone, by the way.
Newsom and Democrats “hosted” some of the elusive Texas Democrat lawmakers in hiding who are breaking quorum to try to prevent Texas‘s plans for redistricting, because the U.S. Department of Justice raised legal concerns over the constitutionality of four districts in the state over where district lines were redrawn in 2021 following the heavily manipulated 2020 Census.
Newsom claims his motive is “to defend democracy against the GOP’s hyper-partisan gerrymander.”
Because DEMOCRACY.
This is Newsom’s gentler, softer sell of the plan:
“The Governor and state leaders have floated a potential statewide ballot measure that would reaffirm California’s commitment to national independent redistricting and allow voters to temporarily adjust the state’s congressional map only if Texas or other GOP-led states manipulate theirs.”
Always refreshingly to the point, Assemblywoman Alexandra Macedo (R-Tulare) offered this:
“Governor Newsom’s redistricting scheme sets a dangerous precedent that will collapse the foundational principles of democracy into a zero-sum game of power politics.
“Governor Newsom is thumbing his nose at the voters who created the California Citizens Redistricting Commission, not once, but twice. His disregard for the voters’ will is an alarming abuse of power that will cost the state at least $200 million when many Californians are without clean, reliable water or access to adequate health care.
“In a democracy, the power is with the people, not politicians. Otherwise, the public rightfully loses faith in our institutions, elected officials and system of governance.”
This was just another embarrassing Democrat stunt by the party in total meltdown. As the Globe reported Friday, “Democrats have dramatically failed to offer the American people any credible policy, or show any willingness to tackle the very real issues working Americans face – like sky-high electricity rates, or failing public schools, or public safety.”
Gavin Newsom’s stunt Friday only seals Democrats’ eminent failure.
Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
