A former campaign staffer for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has been arrested for allegedly making terroristic threats against a New York City public high school.
Iman Abdul, 27, is accused of posting the location of Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences in Manhattan Beach on Google Maps along with a message that called for the school to be attacked.
According to the New York Post, Abdul wrote, “If anyone needs a public school in NYC to attack for whatever reason … Lexus driving Israhell loving Zionisits all attend here.” The post has since been deleted.
She added, “They’ve all gone on ‘Birthright,’” referencing a program that offers free trips to Israel for Jewish young adults.
The post was visible to her 25,000 Instagram followers before it was removed, per Trending Politics.
Police arrested Abdul at her Brooklyn home on Friday. She has been charged with making a terroristic threat, acting in a manner injurious to a child, aggravated harassment, and making a threat of mass harm.
Abdul previously worked in 2018 on the Democratic primary campaigns of both Ocasio-Cortez and New York State Senator Julia Salazar. Salazar confirmed she paid Abdul as a canvasser that summer.
In a 2019 interview, Abdul described herself as a City College of New York student majoring in childhood education, sociology, and Latino studies. She also served as a director at IntegrateNYC, a youth group advocating for “desegregation” in city schools.
The post drew swift backlash from groups monitoring antisemitic threats. Department of Education staffer and activist Tova Plaut said, “A map. A pin. A call to harm Jews, fellow New Yorkers, children, teachers. This isn’t just dangerous. It’s evil. Jew-hatred doesn’t stop with a threat. It escalates. We need immediate and unequivocal action.”
Plaut also stated, “I am outraged and horrified that a NYC school was publicly marked for attack simply because of its Jewish population.”
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the department’s intelligence unit was alerted to the threat shortly after it was made, according to sources familiar with the case.
StopAntisemitism, a watchdog group, posted the screenshot on X and accused Abdul of “inviting people to attack a Jewish school.” The group said, “This incitement against Jews, specifically minor children, must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
In a direct message after her post, Abdul appeared to defend her actions.
“I never called for an attack on the school in the sense of mass organization or not even individual people attacking individuals, that’s literally stupid,” she wrote. “I called for an attack on the school, the Zionist institution funded by our public dollars … we have every right to verbally attack the school.”
Following her arrest, Abdul deleted her Instagram and LinkedIn accounts.
“This kind of hate stems from years of indoctrination from CUNY and NYC schools – it isn’t born overnight,” Moshe Spern, president of United Jewish Teachers, said. “The antisemitism embedded in every university protest over the past 22 months comes as no surprise to anyone.”
