As an elected member of Congress, you rely on your staff to keep your office running. If you alienate your staff, as Jasmine Crockett is alleged to have done, then someone is going to start talking to the media.
The New York Post ran an “exclusive” on Thursday that spilled the tea on how Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas has been using her position to make herself an influencer for Democrats, while apparently treating her staff like garbage and demanding diva-like treatment.
The liberal loudmouth, 44, has rocketed to fame since taking office in January 2023 as a fiery antagonist of the Republican president and his allies.
But three sources who have worked with or for Crockett say she’s rarely present when TV cameras aren’t rolling — and terrorizes staff when she does appear.
Crockett is not often found at her government-provided suite in the Longworth House Office Building, with one insider saying she prefers to work from her nearby luxury apartment building, sometimes for weeks on end.
“She is laying around her apartment, won’t come into the office, and is really just indifferent to staff and will scream at them,” the former aide said.
“She is never in the office and is very disengaged. She does her bulls— that goes viral, and then freaks out over the most random things.”
A second source close to Crockett’s team added: “It is widely known that she’s not nice to staff and is just not a really dedicated member focused on constituents.”
“She is focused almost exclusively on being an influencer, not a member of Congress,” said a third source who has worked with Crockett, describing her as “all diva, no wow.”
When Crockett does show up for work on Capitol Hill — often to attend a committee hearing where she deploys a made-for-social-media attack on Trump — she prefers to have a staff member drive her the short distance to her office in a rented car rather than the staffer’s own, a cheaper option commonly used by lawmakers.
Crockett has burned through employees at such a pace that she’s becoming known as a present-day version of the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), long called the Capitol’s toughest boss.
A number of staff have become fed up with their treatment, while others have either been fired or left on their own — a distinction often difficult to discern in Washington.
Some former aides cited fear of retribution when declining to participate in this story.
“She thinks she’s her own best adviser, she knows best, and has this toxic staff environment,” a source said. “She gets rid of press people because she’s like, ‘I do all of the press stuff.’”
On one occasion described to The Post, Crockett reduced a legislative aide to tears, bellowing: “Do you really want to be here? And if not, you can leave!”
Another aide, a young black woman, was fired abruptly and confided to a colleague: “I don’t want to hear Jasmine Crockett talk about helping black women when she just fired one for no reason!”
While Crockett did not respond to the Post when they asked for comment, she did end up responding to CBS’s Major Garrett when he asked about the Post story yesterday. Her response was to laugh, and then offer every single excuse for the story.
The congresswoman erupted in laughter when asked about the report during an interview on “The Takeout with Major Garrett” on CBS News.
“Oh my goodness, listen, I know that I have arrived, honey,” Crockett said, after composing herself. “That is the way that I see this.”
“Because as Beyoncé says, if they’re not talking about you, then obviously you must not be doing anything,” she added.
In her interview with CBS News, Crockett did not address the specific allegations from congressional staffers but called the report “more slander, more nonsense, more lies.”
“And honestly, I don’t think that the New York Post would probably be the first ones to be able to figure out if I was a boss from hell,” she said dismissively, touting her “five and a half years” of public service.
The congresswoman has only served about four and half years in public office.
“I have happily served on the state level for – I did two years there, and now I am at year two and a half on the federal level,” she said before flubbing the 4th-grade math problem.
“All of a sudden I’m this terrible person and terrible boss? Yeah, I don’t think so,” Crockett continued.
The congresswoman went on to bemoan “all of the scrutiny that comes with being not only a woman, but being young and being a black woman.”
“Your hate is my motivation,” she added. “So keep hating. All it does is motivate me to continue to do what I do.”
I am sure that “hate” is motivating Crockett, because she loves the publicity and attention she gets. However, judging from her reaction to Major Garrett, I’m pretty sure that the next time she is in her office, she’s going to take a page out of Amy Klobuchar’s book and be throwing things at staffers. She’s attempting to laugh this off, but it’s clear that she is terminally online and knew this story was out there, so her laughter and Beyonce quote were prepared answers. It’s also clear that she’s no genius, as adding up her years in office seems to be a problem, and she immediately blames sexism, ageism, and racism for this story. I concede that being 44 in Congress is comparatively young, but Crockett is nine years older than AOC. “Young” is a relative term in this case, and she is hardly the first black woman in Congress, either. Being a mean no-show boss is hardly limited to age, race, or sex, as literally everyone who has ever held a job will agree.
Jasmine Crockett and her public antics, along with the hard left turn of the party itself, is wearing thin on other Democrats with bigger platforms than hers.
ESPN host Stephen A. Smith blasted the Democratic Party on “Real Time” on Friday for spotlighting progressive candidates like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-T.X., and argued that Republicans are having a “field day” with all the coverage these progressive Democrats are receiving.
Smith contended that while he may not agree with everything President Donald Trump is currently doing, he asserted that some Democrats on Capitol Hill have taken their rhetoric about the president too far, and that their antics will not “work to the benefit of the Democratic Party.”
“When you listen to Jasmine Crockett or an AOC and the way they talk about them, even an Elizabeth Warren to a lesser degree or what have you, the Republicans are having a field day,” he stated. “They’re like, ‘Put them up on the screen. Let’s show them.’ They put they plaster them all over the place.”
The ESPN host then turned his attention to NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, noting that while New Yorkers might vote for him, “America won’t.”
“In a general election, you are going to fall if you are anti-America, if you are anti-capitalism, and you want to embrace extreme leftism and socialism,” he argued.
Smith stated that “they want you scared to say that you’re not scared,” and assured the audience that he is not afraid to challenge progressives like Ocasio-Cortez, Crockett or Mamdani.
Democrats (and the media, but I repeat myself) like Stephen A. Smith may be willing to call out elected officials like Crockett, but they fail to recognize that the entire party has failed to learn any lessons from the 2016 or 2024 elections. Being “anti-Trump” is never going to be enough to win an election. When all of the “80-20” issues end with Democrats taking the most radical minority positions against the American electorate, just because Donald Trump is on the 80% side, then Democrats are never going to win a nationwide general election again. Jasmine Crockett is just a symptom of the larger problem.
So long as Crockett remains in Congress, she’s going to attract attention because she’s willing to get up and yell at Donald Trump and other Republicans – which guarantees that there will always be cameras in her face. Even if Texas redraws their maps, she’ll still be able to get re-elected and be in the House for as long as she wants. However, Crockett has said before that she sees an “end date” to her time in office. Whether she means that, or is just saying it on a day when she really doesn’t want to work, remains to be seen. Stories like this, though, which once again show how highly Crockett thinks of herself and puts down the people around her, are certain to make her work days a whole lot longer and less “diva” like.
