President Donald Trump on Thursday repeated his threat to place Washington, D.C. under federal control, citing rising violent crime and the recent assault on former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) worker Edward Coristine.
In a post to his Truth Social account, Trump addressed Coristine directly while comparing the situation in the nation’s capital to his immigration policies.
“Edward: The Crime situation in Washington, just like our Southern Border where ZERO Illegals entered in the last three months, will be a safe place very soon. Thank you for your bravery and heart. Stay tuned!” Trump wrote.
Resist the Mainstream previously reported that Coristine, known publicly by his nickname “Big Balls,” was attacked earlier this week while intervening to protect a woman from a group of assailants in Washington, D.C.
Authorities said Coristine stepped in when he saw the woman being targeted, confronting the attackers.
During the altercation, he was beaten severely, sustaining a concussion and other injuries, but his actions prevented the assault from escalating further.
The attack has brought new urgency to Trump’s calls for stronger enforcement measures in the city.
Trump criticized D.C.’s handling of youth crime on Tuesday, pointing to what he described as violent gangs and offenders as young as 14 “randomly attacking, mugging, maiming, and shooting innocent Citizens” without fear of consequences.
The president urged that local laws be amended so that violent minors could be prosecuted as adults starting at the age of 14.
“If D.C. doesn’t get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run, and put criminals on notice that they’re not going to get away with it anymore,” Trump said earlier this week.
He concluded his remarks with his signature slogan: “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Support for Trump’s position came from former DOGE head Elon Musk, who also weighed in on the matter following news of the attack.
Musk said Coristine’s actions during the incident underscored the urgency of restoring safety in the nation’s capital.
“It is time to federalize DC,” Musk stated, directly backing the idea of federal intervention.
In additional remarks to reporters, Trump said Coristine had been “very badly hurt” during the assault.
He repeated his warning to the city’s leadership to “straighten their act out” or face federalization.
The proposal for federal control would represent a significant shift in Washington’s governance.
The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that an incident occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Sunday in the 1400 block of Swann Street NW.
Suspects approached victims standing near a vehicle and demanded the car before physically assaulting one of the individuals, according to the police report.
Trending Politics (TP) highlighted that NBC 4 Washington reported that the suspects fled the scene after a Metropolitan Police cruiser arrived.
Two suspects—a 15-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl from Hyattsville, Maryland—were apprehended and charged with unarmed carjacking.
D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb issued a statement in response to the incident.
“No one who lives, works or visits D.C. should experience this; it is horrific and disturbing,” Schwalb said, per TP.
